📘Book Info
A thrilling new fantasy series by international bestselling author and Kung Fu master KATHIA, who Booklist calls sure-to-please, entertaining, and impressive.
He was supposed to die.
Carrick the Loyal lived by his vows to the king. And so when the king’s seer foretold his death on the battlefield where the ravens do not cry, he accepted it as his duty.
Only he didn’t die.
“He’s defied the gods,” he hears whispered. “He’s defied the king, for the king is of the gods.” Worse: after a lifetime of faithful service, his king looks at him in equal parts calculation, jealousy, and fear. Carrick the Defiant they call him now, because he’s made the gods liars.
To set things right and prove his continued fealty, Carrick agrees to set out on a treacherous mission for the king: to fetch the famed Blue Seer. Reputed to be flawless in her predictions, Carrick knows she has the power to countermand what was foretold before and restore his good his name.
The Blue Seer holds his life in her hands. Only when they meet, she tells him their fates are joined—for he will continue to live, even as the king and the gods want him to die.
A dangerous warrior.
An envious king.
A world where the gods lie…
💭Our Thoughts
"the meaning of the future was in the eyes of the beholder and subject to biased interpretation"
This first book sets the foundation for the series introducing the characters as well as setting the stage
Think of the days of King Arthur blended with tales of the gods of old.
We have knights and princesses and magicians, evil princes with plans of betrayal, and those who were betrayed but still have fight left. And let us not forget the ones who set the wheels in motion - The Seers who are beholden and those who are to be hidden
The chapters flash back and forth between the characters (Yes, I used a notepad to keep track of who was who because this is one of those tales where the little things count ) setting up their places on the board
The characters are well-developed and relatable, each with their own unique motivations and flaws.
Just a couple of them are:
Carek the Loyal was born without a future so he was able to choose his destiny and he chose to serve his king
Elin was denied the chance to be given a destiny because of her gifts but the gods felt otherwise
Felan was denied his future because of greed but he was not backing down
There are so many more the princess her priest and her husband
The prince, Carek's best friend
This was an engaging and action-packed story that kept me entertained from beginning to
Well it is far from over I am looking forward to the next in series
Starring a well-rounded cast of characters each with their own unique motivations and flaws
All take place in a richly detailed universe that easily transports the reader
I recommend it to anyone who enjoys fantasy novels
