The Gate
The Immortal Coil Saga Book 1
by Brandi Schonberg
Genre: Epic Fantasy
Amarynn, a legendary warrior who hates everything she's become, desperately wants her existence to end. But there's one problem with that. She's immortal.
She's also made a terrible mistake having given away the secrets of her immorality to Venalise Korr, a powerful mage capable of twisting that magic into something monstrous. Now Venalise has kidnapped Regealth, Amarynn's creator, and stolen the magical stone called The Gate – the key to everything immortal. Determined to right her wrongs, Amarynn enters into an uneasy partnership with the king's son.
Together, Amarynn and Jael risk everything to rescue both the mage and the stone. If their rescue fails, Venalise will have the power to create a league of immortal warriors just like Amarynn. With that power secured, the wars between kingdoms will never end. And if the wars continue, Amarynn loses the ending she seeks. Though now that she's gotten close to Prince Jael, she doesn't know if that's a bad thing after all.

Who designed your book covers?
My original cover designer was K.M. West, and she’s
amazing! But when I decided to republish The Gate, I thought I should also
change the cover. Through Indie Authors Exchange (IAX), I found Konstance
Kreates and it was love at first sight. When I looked at her pre-made
selections, I noticed a set of three and I couldn’t take my eyes off of them.
They were tailor-made for my series (unbeknownst to her). She also designed the
maps. You will definitely be seeing more of her work on my stories!
If you had to do it all over again,
would you change anything in your latest book?
Would I change anything in The Gate. YES. ALWAYS. If I
could take it back and keep perfecting it, I would. But at some point, I have
to keep moving forward and just do better with the second and third books.
Did you learn anything during the
writing of your recent book?
Something I learned is that I still have so much to learn
about storytelling. I notice missed opportunities more than ever and I seek to
avoid those as I write the sequels in the Immortal Coil Saga and all my other
stories.
If your book was made into a film, who
would you like to play the lead?
For the longest time, I thought I had Amarynn cast. But the
further I got into writing this series, the more she became her own person and
it became impossible to see anyone else in her place. ((Insert actress from
PR2)) was my favorite for the longest time, though. I also thought ((girl from
Witcher)) would be good.
Do your characters seem to hijack the
story or do you feel like you have the reigns of the story?
I most definitely do not have the reins on The Immortal
Coil Saga. Characters I don’t know simple show up, Amarynn says things I never
planned for her to say, and twists and circumstances develop all on their own.
The unfolding of events is a mystery to me and even I am unsure if the ending I
think will happen. Amarynn and Venalise have a very bad habit of making rash
decisions without consulting me. Ultimately, I have a general direction I think
this story will go, but what happens along the way is most definitely in the
hands of the characters, much to Bent’s dismay. That poor man… I hear him sigh
in my head all the time when crazy things start happening!!
Is there an writer which
brain you would love to pick for advice? Who would that be and why?
I would love to pick Pierce Brown’s
brain. He is the author of the Red Rising series and I adore everything about
his work. He manages to be dark, gritty, and elegant all at he same time.
Fun Facts/Behind the Scenes/Did You
Know?'-type tidbits about the author, the book or the writing process of the
book.
Behind the scenes:
a. Pierce Brown once asked me for an elevator pitch for The
Gate and I froze. EPIC FAIL
b. WheI first started writing The Gate, I got stuck at
chapter 14. It started to read like a fantasy Scooby-Doo episode and I deleted
all but the first two chapters. But that’s how we learn, right?
c. My original physical models for characters (and almost
all of them have changed now):
Amarynn- Kiera Knightly as Guinevere from King Arthur
Jael- Chris Hemsworth
Bent- Sean Connery
Venalise- Regina from Once Upon a Time
Aron- Captain Hook from Once Upon a Time
Regealth- ((actor from Snow White))
d. The only three characters I could easily cast today:
Bent- Ser Davos Seaworth
Aron- Finan from The Last Kingdom
Ehrinell- Margery from Game of Thrones
What are your top 10 favorite
books/authors?
a. Pierce Brown and his Red Risinng Series- favorites of
the 6 books so far: Red Rising, Iron Gold, Lightbringer
b. Robin Hobb- The Farseer Trilogy, specifically
c. Sarah J Mass- Throne of Glass series (but the last four
are my favorites- Empire of Storms being my favorite)
d. The Unlikely Ones by Mary Brown
e. Myrryn’s Gift and the two books that follow- talk about
twists!!
f. Mary Stewart’s Arthurian Legend books (The Crystal Cave,
The Hollow Hills, The Last Enchantment, The Wicked Day)
g. The Crimson Chalice
h. Anne McCaffery- Dragonriders of Pern
