Peter Felton
If there was a meme for being a total cliché?
That would be me.
It wouldn’t even need a description, just a pathetic snapshot of me in my threadbare pyjamas, standing at my filthy kitchen table, staring into the wall like a loser.
Because that is exactly who I was. The middle-aged widower caught up in his very own hell of a midlife crisis. The guy who wasn’t over his dead wife. The single dad. Pathetic, Peter. Utterly pathetic.
The guy who thought… I didn’t know what I’d been thinking. Because if someone had told me that at forty-five, I’d willingly go on a reality-TV dating show?
Yeah. You get the picture. The memes were brutal. Every single one of them was bouncing around the internet like a contagious super virus. The internet was forever. And so was love.
It wasn’t who I was, this…this joke of a man I’d become. It never was, and now? Now I was standing here wondering how I would ever leave the house again.
Oliver Jacobs
When I was a kid, I thought I was invincible. Turns out…sometimes I was. Sometimes my confidence took me places, and anyway. When I fell? I got up. Made a plan, organised my options and ran with the obvious solution. I was good like that.
But I hadn’t counted on…this one plan going so very, very wrong. So terribly, awfully wrong.
Because my requests were simple and easy. Youngish, around my age. No facial hair. Nice. No kids, no baggage.
Also gay.
And then? They gifted me…Peter Fenton. Everything I hadn’t asked for. And now he is all I want.
So…should I save the date? Or just swallow down the fact that Oliver Jacobs…just made the biggest mistake of his life.
Save the Date is a standalone novel set in the Square Mile Rogues universe. Content warnings for death of a partner, violent grief and finding out that love…really matters.
💭Our Thoughts
This is such a hard one for me to do justice to. It wasn't just a romance.
It was two men, both lost, looking for something to fill the cracks, just not knowing what it was.
You could not find two people who were more opposite than Oliver and Peter. They were true yin and yang.
Oliver is, was…
I have to be honest here; he made my skin crawl at first. His holier-than-thou work attitude, then his sexual evening escapades while riding high; Yes, I was being totally judgmental.
He did have a problem, and he needed help, but first impressions are hard to shake. He did eventually endear himself to me.
Oliver requested a single, no drama, no baggage, openly gay roomie who was looking for his forever.
Thanks to Kirsten’s absolutely slimy black heart, he gets roomed with the complete opposite of what he asked for:
Peter.
Lawd, he was such a gentle soul. Drifting for so long in an ocean of grief.
Gotta love his boys for tossing him a life preserver or throwing chum into the waters around him - perspective.
Just kidding about the chum, though he did have a bit of trouble with the production crew in the beginning.
But which contestant didnt? Thanks to the above-mentioned slimy black heart, Kirsten.
Peter and Oliver are thrown into an apartment together for the production.
Despite seeming to have nothing in common and neither being what the other had requested, Oliver and Peter find a quiet strength in each other.
This is a very slow burn with an absolutely stellar cast and a terrific storyline
Obstacles to overcome to move forward (including Kirsten's drummed up drama - like there wasn't enough already)
Hard truths that need to be faced (real ones, not just our slimy director's version of entertainment)
And old wounds that need to be treated
All the above was what made this such a fabulous read.
The author didn’t gloss over the painful stuff, the nitty gritty, the healing, the making amends.
Coming to terms with yourself and finally accepting who you are
The good
And the bad
They eventually get there, and it was worth the bumps and bruises along the way
OH, on a side note… There is the sweetest secondary romance running in the background.
