Sound Catchers is about Maddy, a twin girl who experiences hearing loss early in her childhood. Initially, she is fitted with bilateral hearing aids. It creates an awareness of children with hearing loss as part of the world around them, enabling the reader a glimpse into that experience through Maddy's journey.
This book contributes to a greater understanding of those who live with hearing loss. It helps the reader to build empathy, and it creates an awareness of differences. As such, it holds a valuable place in the social/emotional curriculum, which is taught in schools nationwide.
💭Our Thoughts
The easy-to-understand storyline brings the reader along with Maddy as she navigates the changes in her world, from only hearing some sounds to hearing everything loud and clear
Beautifully illustrated pictures bring her journey to life.
We get to go with Maddy to her doctor’s, to her hearing test, to see her in recovery, and we get to be there when she hears all the sounds again
Sound Catchers discusses hearing loss, hearing aids, and introduces cochlear implants to younger readers, as well as to older ones like me.
The summary on hearing loss, as well as the statements from her students who used hearing aids, was a bonus that left my granddaughter with all kinds of questions about Maddy’s condition (she is at that curious age) and hearing aids. This opened the door for a little exploration of our own.
