EXCERPT
I hit a wall. A
solid, warm wall that smells dreadfully sinful. Before I have time to process,
two firm hands are on my shoulders to steady me. “Hey, watch where you’re
going” comes the deepest, sexiest voice imaginable, which would be incredibly
hot if the words spoken were anything other than rude and demanding. Looking
up, which is crazy, considering I’m one step higher, I freeze as my eyes land
on a dark, handsome god of a man who looks like he wants to commit murder. What
is it with me and jerks tonight?
His eyes get
bigger, and his brows furrow as soon as my shocked gaze meets his. He has short
black hair that’s longer on the top and styled perfectly. His menacing eyebrows
are folded downward from scowling at me. The dark scruff that shadows his face
is so sexy, trimmed razor straight, accentuating his perfectly chiseled jaw.
Mentally slapping myself, I apologize.
“Crap, I’m so
sorry. I didn’t see you there.” He doesn’t release his hold.
“That’s because
your head was down. Your eyes should be looking forward.” His voice is hard and
demanding.
Flustered and—I
reluctantly admit—slightly turned on by his strong, firm grip and penetrating
stare, I stand there frozen in place. After what seems like minutes but I’m
sure is only seconds, I snap out of it and apologize again. “Sorry, I’ll watch
where I’m going from now on.” The words rush out as I pull away to leave, this
time keeping my head up. I think I hear him say something else behind me, but I
don’t stop. Running into one of the hottest guys I’ve seen in a while should’ve
been the highlight of my night. Instead, I’m more irritated. Do all
good-looking men have a license to be an ass?

GUEST POST
My Daily Writing Process:
My goal is to write seven days a week. There
have been a few times that I have met those expectations, but they are few and
far between. If we’re going by word count per week, my ideal would be 10,000
words per week on average. I aim to write at least 2,000 per day. If I’m on a
good streak, that daily average will be low, and if I have a lot of outside
commitments, then that average is high. I keep a blank calendar in my file and
record each day's starting and ending word count, with the daily total circled
and tallied for the week.
While writing, I look back periodically
throughout the day to reread things and make corrections, but I mostly try to
jam it out. The following day, I reread and edit everything from the
previous day using Grammarly. A more in-depth edit, like listening to it aloud,
happens when the entire book is complete, and I tackle my full edit. Once my
daily review is done, I continue the story where I left off. With this
technique, everything will have been edited at least once after the book is
finished. Some authors say you shouldn’t edit as you go and instead just get
the book done. I don’t think there’s a right or wrong way to go about it, and
for me, that gives me too much anxiety.
To stay on track while writing and keep the
story flowing, I always have my scene outlines and previous chapter summaries
close by. I’m old school and handwrite these things, keeping them in a file for
the current book that I carry around with my laptop. My personal trick is
printing out blank calendars and keeping track of what chapters occur on what
days from start to finish. It helps me with story pacing. So, if there is a
significant event halfway through the outline, I will choose when it will happen
and write it on my calendar to pace the book up to that moment, and so on. This
is done in pencil and changes a lot. I write my stories in order, not skipping
ahead to write a scene out of order.
I refer to my chapter calendar multiple
times, ensuring I’m pacing well, not forgetting anything that has already
happened, and knowing exactly when something I’m referencing occurred. I’m
constantly reviewing my scene cards to see what’s coming up, what I need to
allude to, or if I forgot anything I wanted to include from the scene I’m
working on. Also in the file is a list of random character's names that may
only come up a couple of times, but this way, I’m not scrolling back through
the entire book looking for them when I forget the name I used.
My struggle with writing has been
disciplining myself to do it and setting the promotion of my first book aside.
It is still early in publication, so it may get easier as time progresses. I’d
like to reach the point where I have a dedicated writing location rather than
the various spots around my house. I’m wondering if it may help with my focus
to find a coffee shop or café to frequent for dedicated writing time. I plan on
exploring that option in the coming weeks.
