How do two people write one novel?
The number one question we get from people is how we manage
the process of writing
a novel together. This is something we were unclear of when
we first started to write
Fowl Play. We did some research and realized that there is
no real correct or standard
way of co-authoring a novel. At that point, we knew we
needed to figure it out on our
own. It was quite the learning curve, and one we are still
on.
For Fowl Play, we worked together on plotting out the
storyline. We did it on a chapter-
by-chapter basis. Then, we divided up the chapters between
the two of us. We each
went and wrote our assigned chapters. We then exchanged
chapters and read through
what the other one had written. We added, deleted and edited
each other’s chapters
and then sat down to go over things together. While this
worked, we spent a lot of time
backtracking and working to ensure continuity. We found that
sometimes one of us
would write something in a chapter that didn’t align with a
chapter written by the other.
This created a lot of extra work, and resulted in having us
rewrite several chapters,
trying to incorporate storylines into sections that needed
it. It also created a lot of
frustrations for us. They were good storylines, so not
including them was not an option.
We liked them too much.
For the second book, called Lucky Ducky, we did the plotting
together but with even
more details than the first time. And then one of us began
writing. Once the first draft
was completed, the second author began to add to the story,
flesh out areas and do
editing. This method has pros and cons as well. The onus is
on one author to do the
first draft which is a lot of work, even with a detailed
plot. However, it means that it frees
the second author up to begin working on the next novel.
Figuring out the best way to co-author is an ongoing process
that we are still trying to
work out. It must be pointed out that you need to get along
and be confident that your
friendship can withstand any disagreements. We both often
agree to disagree and let
the other get their way if it’s not a big deal. One of us is
vocal about letting the other get
their way, while the other chooses to keep her mouth shut
and ‘let it go’. We’ll let you
guess which is which.
"First the damn mask, then getting bonked on the head, stuffed in a storage unit, and left to die"
And all before lunch
Do not do that!
Would you just wait a minute?
Why?
Omg, no you didn't!
Those were just a few of the things I yelled at Maddy throughout the story.
Thank goodness she is so hard-headed, anyone else would never have survived.
From the opening scene, I was invested.
Loveable characters that you can't help but get attached to
Humorous antics that kept me laughing throughout the story
Edge-of-your-wits mystery and suspense that kept me turning pages as well as trying to give hints to our trio of self-appointed crime busters - Thank goodness they didn't always listen to me
I must admit a few times during my outburst I'm pretty sure those around me contemplated if I needed a rubber room
This was a fun mystery that will have you wanting more -
And doesn't that just work out great considering this is book one?
