If you’re reading this, I’ve gone missing.

I close the binder I’ve been writing in, and walk into the living room. As I stare out of the window at your house next door, I think about all the things I stand to lose if someone comes for me. My handsome, loving husband, who has no idea what I’ve done. My family, who have supported me no matter what. This beautiful home near the ocean, where I thought I would be safe.

Everyone says that I’m paranoid, but I just think I’m prepared. My secrets have placed me in terrible danger.

So if the worst happens, this binder contains everything you’ll need to find me, hidden in a place only you could guess. You’ve always known me best of everyone, ever since we were girls. You’ll be able to put the pieces together and uncover the truth.

Only you can find me. But you’ll need to do it fast.

Because if you don’t, all your lies will come to light too…

From the no.1 Kindle bestselling author of The Surgeon, comes an outrageously twisty and compelling psychological thriller that you simply won’t be able to put down! Perfect for fans of Shari Lapena, Gillian Flynn and Freida McFadden.

From the no.1 Kindle and Amazon charts bestselling author of The Surgeon, comes an outrageously twisty and

CHAPTER 1
If you’re reading this, I’ve gone missing.
And I have just a few words to get you to know me, to understand what I’m about, to care
about me enough to leave the rut of your daily routine behind and invest a little bit of your
most precious asset—your time—in finding me. In bringing me home.
My plan is to make it as easy as possible. Enclosed in this binder you will find the tidbits
that form a person’s existence. Mine. A jigsaw puzzle made of photos, bank accounts, social
media usernames and passwords, fingerprints, and DNA. Twenty-nine years of personal history
told in a few pictures, some faded with time, others crisp and fresh and new, all equally
meaningful. If I put it in here, whatever it may be, it’s important for you to look at it with an
open mind and decide if it had anything to do with my disappearance.
If I could, now that I’m writing this, I wouldn’t be shy; I’d tell you straight up what’s going
on. But I can’t. I don’t have a crystal ball to know what the future will hold. As I’m sitting at
my desk, in my peaceful den, typing this letter, it’s no easy task to look ahead at such a
horrifying possibility.
Going missing. The thought brings shivers down my spine.
How does one begin to know what will be the critical information needed to solve my
disappearance? How do I choose from the vast number of memories contained within my life’s
journey, those that would help you find me?
Nevertheless, I have to try, blindly, like someone feeling their way through the deepest
darkness, frail yet unstoppable, seeking the power of light to shine over them and set them free.
Although it’s deathly serious, building this binder reminds me of a game I used to play with
my best friend as children. Or—I should be precise—teenagers, just starting to look at life
differently, yet still believing in the magic that had lit our childhoods with enchantment.
I remember going on two- or three-days outings here and there, ready to explore the world,
to conquer it, to make it ours. I remember the pervasive smell of mothballs that ruined our
appetite and gave us migraines, yet didn’t stop us from writing secret missives that could only
be read in a mirror’s reflection, using one of Da Vinci’s favorite ways to encode messages. I’m
a lefty, so mirror-writing comes easier to me than it would to most people. But that’s not the
point; I digress.
Life feels this way to me right now, like a mirror-written letter I cannot comprehend. But
if you can find the right mirror, my life will bare its secrets in front of your eyes. And you’ll
understand everything I’m trying to say here but cannot find the words for.
You see, I’m afraid for my life. And I’m not sure whether the secret I discovered is the
reason why I’ve gone missing and you’re reading this. All I know is that I’m caught in a
quagmire of shadows and deceit, an inescapable trap that might have swallowed me already.
My only hope is you. Most people like crime in fiction, on television or in books. Those
people shy away from looking at crime’s realities, repelled, shrouding themselves in disbelief,
thinking that denial will be the protective shield that will keep their lives pristine and safe.
Others are the exact opposite, eager to stare at blood puddles and flare their nostrils at the first
whiff of death, unrelentingly looking for scapegoats and making up lies to support their
fictitious scenarios as they go along. To them, the lure of someone else’s misery is heady and
unescapable.
Neither can be trusted to find the truth. Especially when that truth is wrapped in a lie,
shielded from the light of day in such ways that no one can see it. Serving the lie in perpetuity,
just as a host organism serves and feeds the parasite coiled around its heart.
This is the kind of person you’ll need to be to find me. Different. Someone who chose to
fight crime, not just be entertained by it in fiction and news media. Someone with an
unrelenting passion for making people’s lives a little better at the worst moments of their
existence. I’m hoping that’s who you are, hellbent on a mission to find out what’s real, and that
you won’t stop until you get answers.
You were meant for this.
Only you can find me.
Please do.
Before I end this message, I have to apologize to my dear husband. I’m so sorry for hiding
this binder. Just know I didn’t hide it from you, and I hope you found it easily. You know
everything about me anyway; probably nothing within its pages is a surprise to you. I hid it
because it gives whoever finds it complete access to my life, to everything I am, I own, and I
love. You’re already privy to all that, but such power in the hands of the wrong people could
have terrifying consequences. So, I kept it hidden, away from nosy housekeepers and the
occasional overnight visitors, and you obviously found it and gave it to the detective
investigating my disappearance. Thank you for doing all that. Maybe it will help bring me back
a little bit sooner.
To all the people who care about me, I want to say something, knowing it won’t bring much
relief to the anguish you must be feeling right now. Here it is, nevertheless. I’m strong, resilient,
and I can endure. My parents raised me well. I won’t go down without a fight. Just know that,
and know I’m counting the seconds until we’re reunited.
So please flip through the pages and find answers to your questions, some of which you
haven’t yet asked. It’s in your power to save me. No one else can.
Please find me.
