Under Cover of Chaos
By Liz Wanic with Rebekah Wanic
Book Summary
“… a fast-paced thriller that plunges the reader into the morally complex world of a UN humanitarian mission in Bangui...a must-read for fans of thrillers with high-stakes political undertones.”
–Kim McCollum, author of What Happens in Montana and Harriet Hates Lemonade
A serial killer hides behind an untouchable global institution. A broken system fails the victims. One woman vows to uncover the truth.
When young women are found dead in the capital of the Central African Republic, United Nations official Stella Fairmont is reminded of the unsolved disappearance of a friend. As she investigates, she uncovers what may be a chilling pattern: similar deaths in another UN location.
The deeper she digs, the more twisted the view becomes and Stella finds herself up against a system built on compromise, in which accountability is often an illusion. When the truth gets blurred and personal histories can be hidden, the only way to survive is to trust her instincts. But as friendships run thin and time runs out, she must navigate a minefield of lies, moral complexity, and buried secrets — all while trying to stay ahead of someone who would kill to keep the truth hidden.

Guest Post:
When Your Writing Partner Is Also Your Twin
By Liz Wanic
Identical twins often get asked some common questions: Do you have telepathy? Did you take each other’s tests in school? Did you switch places on your boyfriends? Can you tell me what she’s thinking right now? At some point you get used to the questions and you can rattle off the answers. No, no, no, probably.
I suppose never pretending we were each other makes my sister and I semi-boring as twin – some would say we wasted the opportunity. But, despite sharing the same DNA and looking remarkably alike growing up, we were always distinctly different people, very similar in certain ways and very different in others. And to me, that’s always been the huge benefit of having my particular twin: knowing there is someone around who inherently gets you, but who looks at things from a different angle and can tell you when you’re being ridiculous.
As any author goes through the planning process and dives into their writing, being able to bounce ideas off someone who can help steer things in the right direction is invaluable. A lot of writers do this through collaboration with editors, beta readers, and writing groups. However, even when you have those sounding boards, there will be frustrating times when you have something you want to explain but you’re not quite able to. But if you can start to lay your thoughts out and have someone there who not only gets what you mean, but finds the right way to express it – that’s gold.
My sister and I were able to apply our twin benefit – inherent understanding with a different point of view – to writing Under Cover of Chaos. And since we’ve chosen different career paths and have lived in wildly different places, we were also able to pull insights from these divergent experiences into our creative pursuits.
The other day, someone asked me, “what’s it like to have a twin?” I just stared for a minute, because that’s a hard one to answer. I don’t know what it’s like not to have twin; it’s always been a part of who I am. But if we narrow the question to “what’s it like to have a twin in the context of writing a book together?” Then I’d say the only answer is – it’s great!
