BLURB:
…it was about the land.
It is July of 1859, a month of sweltering dog days and feverish emotional bombast. Life is good for widower Rundell Ingram and his hazel-eyed, roan-haired son, Hamilton. Between the two of them, they take care of Moccasin Hollow, their sprawling ancestral plantation home in the rolling farming country outside Queensborough Towne in east Georgia. Adjoining Ingram lands is Wisteria Bend, the vast slave-holding plantation of Andrew and Corinthia Greer, their daughter Sarah, and son Benjamin. Both families share generations of long-accepted traditions, and childhood playmates are no longer children. The rangy, even-tempered Norman-Scottish young Hamilton is smitten with Sarah, who has become an enticing capricious beauty—the young lovers more in love with each passing day, and only pleasant times ahead of them.
…but a blood tide of war is sweeping across the South, a tide that will forever change everyone and everything.

Excerpt:
It wasn't long before a column of ragged men in missed-matched uniforms shuffled into view, two mounted officers leading. Hamilton couldn't tell whether their stripes on their uniforms were red or yellow, but what he did see struck him like nothing before. On a staff braced from one saddle, the slight morning breeze lifted the tattered standard. During three bloody years he'd never seen the Confederacy's red, white and blue square infantry flag with its intrepid cross saultoir. He felt a gutty pride for these depleted dogged men, wanted to say to them how proud he was, how much they were owed. As the column shuffled closer, a stiffer gust whipped full-out the shell-and-shot torn banner, flaring its defiant red. Out into the sunshine, he walked to the side of the road, pulled himself straight, raised his hand, and saluted these soldiers of a mangled army. He knew some of them must be worried about homes and loved ones. He held his salute as they passed, wondering if they were hungry or wounded or hadn't slept. One mounted officer tipped his hat, returned Hamilton's salute, then looked straight ahead.
