🚨 Book Tour with Guest Post & Giveaway ➱ WORD UP! A Children's Picture Book by Author Raven Howell

Words are the windows through which children view the world. Familiar, uncommon, short and sweet, long and quirky; words make all the difference.

In Word Up, discover how a word packs a punch and possesses the power to heal, hurt, help, and humble. Watch children learn how to choose words wisely, and to recognize that sometimes, the simplicity of kindness itself is expressed in gentle silence.

Words are mighty!
Words are strong!
We write them,
Speak them,
Sing our song.

I hope you learn new words today,
And think about the ones you say.

Language is key in child development. It’s linked to problem solving, emotional regulation and in general, connected to how we think. Do you know the 3-3-3 rule for preschoolers? It involves a sensory grounding technique to focus on the present moment, where words are the basis of calming the child to release the present fear. When a child is asked to name three things they see, three sounds they hear, and move three of their body parts, words become the catalysts! Responses may include words like “toy, cat, apple, wind, tv, bee, clap my hands, stomp my feet, and rub my belly” - all great examples of language foundations for toddlers. They have the ability to bring alignment to our emotional and mental body.

When a child is old enough to start school, there’s a focused attention on how we choose words- bullying words, or kind, helpful ones. Negative words can cause emotional and physical damage while positive words improve our moods and cognitive function. These basic ideas inspired my writing WORD UP! a children’s picture book appropriate for ages 3 to 8.

Written and illustrated to create a fun, graphic, easily accessible, colorful format, I hope my book helps kids to pause and think about the power of their words, to explore the way words make us feel and bring about our experiences.

On some pages in the book words explode, on others, words gently shine. Words can hug and be “splendiferous!”. And sometimes silence may be most appropriate and speak louder than words.

I think now, more than ever, it’s important to empower the youngest generations in our world to consciously embody their choice for kindness, and that starts with loving words. I know WORD UP! is playing a small part toward that goal.
