By the time Thomas stepped into the kitchen, she’d done everything but check the site for errors. He wished her a good morning as he went for a cup of coffee. She wished him the same and looked up at him. He was in a suit again.
“Going in today?” she asked and turned her eyes back to her work.
“Yeah, today’s the last day before I’m off for Christmas. I hope to hear something back on yesterday’s proposal.”
“Good luck!” Slyly, she added, “Any chance you’d like to take the kids with you to the office?”
“Not even the slimmest chance,” he replied with a chuckle. Then, he sat across from her and sipped his coffee. “When I get home today, we can look at your old office room and try to figure out which kid to put in it.”
“That would be nice. In the meantime, share with me where you hid the kids’ Christmas presents. I’ll get them wrapped today before they stumble upon them.”
Thomas looked at her blankly. “Didn’t you shop for their presents this time? I thought that was what you were doing when I sat here with them last Saturday.”
Sarah’s heart nearly jumped up her throat. “That was to get my haircut!”
“I thought that was code! Like, ‘I’m going to get my haircut, but I’m really shopping for the kids! Wink, wink!’”
“Please, please, please tell me you’re kidding right now!” She wanted to scream, but she was afraid it would wake the children, and during this conversation especially, she needed them to remain asleep. “It’s three days until Christmas, Thomas!”
“You never told me once to shop for the kids,” he countered. “I’m not a mind-reader, Sarah.”
“Well… start being one then!”
Thomas huffed and shook his head. “I can’t do it today. I’ve got to work.”
“I have to work too, you know. I still have one website to finish and this one to look over before I send the information to the company.” She rolled her eyes at him and sneered. “Besides that, what would I do with Andy and Kimberley if I went shopping? I can’t exactly take them along with me to buy their own presents.”
“What about Marie? You did her blog, right? She owes you a favor now.”
