Two days later, Paul had put on a tie for the board meeting, but he knew that wouldn’t last. He hadn’t even tightened the tie fully.
Now, he sat at one end of a large conference table with ten men and women dressed the same way. The women didn’t wear ties, but they were just as buttoned-up as the men. As if yearning for the wisdom of the world, the group chatted, and glanced at him. Their colognes mixed in his noise and made him want to sneeze.
Pictures of hot dogs adorned the walls. Couldn’t they have come up with better things to hang on the cream-colored walls? The conference room reminded him of a menu on a shop down the shore.
What did he know? He was just the owner’s son. Well, the deceased owner’s son and poised to inherit the company when he completed his charity mission. He sighed and rubbed the back of his neck. Then he took a few deep breaths. Paul didn’t want this company. He wanted to fix classic cars. Just like he’d been doing and making money for the last ten years.
Owners from all fifty states sought him out fix their pony cars.
He cleared his throat.
The whole room hushed.
They gave him the same respect they gave Dad, which was nice. He hadn’t earned their deference.
“Thanks for coming today.”
“We’re sorry about your father,” someone said.
He didn’t know names or faces having only worked summers here. That was a few years ago.
They all murmured in agreement.
He was, too. The man was a son of a gun, but he was still Dad. And he hadn’t wished the death he had on the old guy or to take over the company. “Thank you.”
