Book Recommendation ➱ The Enemy of Heaven (The Heaven Trilogy) a MM Fantasy Romance by Reni Stankova

The Enemy of Heaven The Enemy of Heaven by Reni Stankova

📖Book Info
In the Kingdom of Heaven, angels rule and demons rot in the shadows. As the third angel prince, Raphael advocated for change, hoping for a more just world, but for years his efforts remained fruitless.

One night, he meets a defiant demon with dangerous powers and sees a chance for success. Raphael recruits the demon as his royal guard, scandalizing the royal court, and turns him into his most trusted ally in a mission to dethrone his tyrannical father, the King of Heaven.

Dante has always despised angels, but after Prince Raphael saved him from unjust execution, he willingly joined his insane plan for a coup. Being the only demon, living among angels used to be repelling, yet in Raphael, he saw hope for the first time.

But they’re playing a dangerous game.

Death and betrayal lurk around the royal court and the prince is in the middle. Would Dante keep Raphael safe long enough for him to enact political change? And what does it mean for the Kingdom of Heaven when an angel and a demon dare to fall for each other?

💭Our Thoughts

This is the first book in the trilogy
There is a lot of world-building and character introduction that takes place in the first few chapters.
It felt a bit slow in the beginning, but that suddenly changed as everything began to fall into place
So many pieces and players to this puzzle, and I love a good puzzle!
As things became clearer: the tension, the suspense, the insane risks, the white knuckle moments;  I found I was left with one massive book hangover - not complaining, it was worth pulling an all-nighter.

Enemy of Heaven is packed with political backstabbing and court politics.
Class segregation and all the ugliness that comes with it
Skeletons - lots of skeletons and lots of closets (and dang if our boys weren't opening all those doors)
Secrets!!!
Plot twists!!
“Bet you didnt see that coming” moments (and I didn’t)
I don't want to give anything away, but I will say:
Trust that NOTHING is what you think it is, and no one is to be trusted
It was one wammy after another

Raphael and Dante were a prime example of opposites attract
Raphael is so hyper-focused on anything historical or factual - knowledge in general
He wants to absorb and understand everything
At times, I found that cute. Other times not so much. Quite a few times, he tested my patience as he missed social cues that made him seem cold (He’s not. He is a bit like a puppy, cuddly and very curious)
Dante, on the other hand. He pitty-partied for a moment, then he got up even stronger.
It was fun watching them work out their “differences” all while falling in love, or attempting to get there

I do wish we had had more one-on-one time with them, but with all the foundation building and character assassinations (just kidding, maybe) going on, it wasn't truly feasible in this first book.
There were other areas that I wish the author had given more focus to as well, but I know many of my answers will be in the next book

This is a full-length novel.
It ends on a cliffhanger, but book two is out, so that is where I am headed this weekend
