Author Interview

Hello and thank you for having me on your blog. I was given several prompts for today and I’ve chosen ‘Do I use images to develop my characters and what they look like’.

Sometimes yes, but most of the time no. Not with characters, but I do for places. With characters, it is more about an idea. Sometimes it’s just a little niggle. Or it can be something I’ve heard or read about.

I am an observer. Some things and people catch my eye, and that starts the wheels turning. You can learn so much about people by just watching what they do and say. Body language rarely lies.

With Ghost, the latest book, it all started when I saw a roofer during the summer. All he had on was a pair of cut-offs, a toolbelt, and boots. Those few moments that I stopped and watched him developed into a book. Then I drew on one of my favourite places in the world. The time and space wrote themselves.

There are times when I spend as much time on secondary characters as I do primary. For me, the supporting characters are essential to telling a good story. It’s like they are the foundation of sorts. I especially writing about strong women characters as I have had and do have many in my life.

For example, the character, Ellen, in Ghost is a true Southern Lady. She is loosely based on one of my aunts, whom I adored. And I do mean loosely. Her mannerisms. The way she sat and, in some instances, the way she spoke.

Once I have a character fleshed out, they have their own voice and tell me their story. And a lot of the time I have no say so in what they say or do. There are times I try to intervene, and nope, they’ll have none of that. That’s why I gave up on planning out a story. Often times, the characters will just blow it up. In the end, I let them have their say.

When it comes to world-building, the characters will often take over that too. I may have an idea of location, but after that, I leave it all up to them. Having said that, no matter where it is, I end up doing a lot of research to make sure that I tell the story as accurately and as detailed as possible.

So… that’s a little about the way I write and how my characters come to life, at least in my head. Sometimes it is like I’m watching a movie in my head. It can be distracting. I was watching a semi-finals football game, and I missed most of the second quarter because I had a character in my head doing things that should not be done while watching football!

I hope that all this has been helpful or at least entertaining for everyone.

Cheers,

Max
