Have You Seen Him

Book Summary

For David Byrdsong, life is a series of daily obligations. An attorney, he lacks both ambition and the ability to commit to a long-term relationship with his girlfriend, Gayle. Abandoned by his family at an airport when he was eleven, he learned to blunt his feelings, despite his subsequent adoption by a loving couple.

Until one day, when David discovers his own face in a missing child ad. Suddenly driven to uncover the truth about his past, he is forced to tap into his inner strength as he encounters corporate conspiracies, murdered bystanders, and distressing suspicions about the only family he’s ever really trusted. David enlists Gayle's help—and the help of an unlikely stranger with secrets of his own—as he attempts to find his true family, whoever they are.

Thrilling, exploratory, and propulsive, Have You Seen Him is a story of lost identity, dangerous secrets, and a deeply personal pursuit of the truth.

Inspired By Images

Some images catch your eye, embed themselves in your memory, and never let go. They haunt you. The organs in your chest seem to twist and turn. You hold your breath as you take it in. This is what happened when I saw an unusual missing child ad more than a decade ago. The boy on the left was 10 years old; the man on the right was 40. It was the same person, the child and his computer-progressed grown-up self. Their eyes seemed to hold mine, pulling me in. I thought about the family who’d been looking for this boy for thirty years. Never giving up. I tore the ad from the paper, carried it around in my bag for a while, and eventually sat down to write a story.

Writing with images opens me up creatively. A powerful visual activates both my brain and my body, by way of the senses. It’s similar to people-watching and developing a backstory as they walk by. We get a passing glimpse of someone and create a story in our minds, just from that brief encounter.

I recently learned about Stendahl Syndrome, a psychological condition. Looking at artwork and experiencing a deep connection to it brings on a rapid heartbeat, dizziness, sweating, and even fainting. Art can cause deeply visceral responses. Writing with images is a way to capture some aspect of that, using the power of the visual to take us to new depths with words.

The formal name for this literary technique is “ekphrastic writing.” Originating from the Greek “ekphrasis,” which means to describe, point out, or explain, it’s a way to transform the visual to the verbal. One of the earliest examples is The Iliad, Homer’s story about scenes depicted on Achilles’ shield.

Poet Jackie Craven describes a few ways to write with images. One approach is to write about our personal response to the artwork. Explore the raw feelings that arise. Another is writing as if we’re in conversation with the subject of the piece, speaking directly to it. On the flip side, we can write as if the image itself is speaking. What does it have to say about who it is and what it wants? We can also expand the art, backwards or forwards. What happened before the moment in the piece? What will happen next? Finally, we can lean into symbolism and write about what the art represents, what message it carries for us. However we choose to engage with an image, the goal is to listen closely and then respond by making it our own. It’s a beautiful invitation to bring a piece of art to life with our own voice, our own perspective. Writing about the missing child ad gave me a chance to honor the photos. When you encounter an image that won’t let you go, that makes you catch your breath, write about it—and watch the powerful story emerge.
