Character and Characters

By Ronald Chapman

With some frequency reviewers and readers tell me that my characters and their development feel very realistic. That’s good, since almost every character is largely created based on some real person with whom I’ve had experiences. In fact, I often tell people, “Better be careful, you could end up in one of my novels!” Of course, we write what we know, so everything is ultimately some reflection of biography and lived experience.

In the case of the Saga of Graces series (A Killer’s Grace, The Dark Side of Grace, The Reckoning of Grace, and Book 4 which is as yet unnamed), it’s a more interesting challenge. The trajectory of the novels is from trauma, to post-traumatic growth, to transcendence to reimagining their future and the world twenty-five years hence. So, the life course of my co-protagonists, Kevin Pitcairn an investigative journalist, and his beloved Maria Elena Maldonado, has to not only be realistic, but grounded in pretty profound development over time.

I suspect that the primary tool at my disposal is my own, real lived experience. Not only have I personally transited the phases I described, at sixty-nine years old I have a frame of reference for the aging process and our growth and development over time. It certainly does not hurt that I have a Master’s in Social Welfare and the underlying human psychology, and four decades of coaching others across any number of settings.

Regardless, the most important orientation I seek is resonance. As I read what I’ve written, does it feel right? And does it feel authentic? The only way I’ve figured that out is to read it out loud to myself. When it hits the mark, I really can feel it in my body. When it’s off the mark, there is an obvious dissonance.

That all sounds very professional I’m sure, yet the creative part that is most compelling is the emergence of the unexpected. Every author I’ve ever interviewed has told me that the muse will have its way with the writer. That’s true to my experience, and also one of the more exciting aspects of the story creation. It’s just really fun to see how things turn out, which is often not as I imagine.

  1. Thank you very much for getting the word out on The Reckoning of Grace, Book 3 of the Saga of Grace series! Delighted by the feedback only ten days into the release, and excited to see the discussions it spurs. Already I've had a number of very insightful questions and comments, some of which are informing the next part of the story. (Yes, there will be Book 4 that will be set in the future to see how this plot line produces!) Very much appreciated! Ronald Chapman
