A hellhound emerged from the swirling smoke, its eyes burning with an evil fire. Two towering demons flanked the beast, their twisted forms radiating dark energy. Accompanying them was a horde of monstrous spiders, their grotesque legs and mandibles glistening in the dim light. Ordi's heart pounded in his chest; he hated spiders—no, he was terrified of them. These were no ordinary arachnids; they ranged from five to eight feet tall, their massive forms looming menacingly. The challenge before him was immense. Hellhounds could withstand most mortal magic, and the demons posed a threat he had only read about in the academy's ancient tomes. Desperately cycling through spells in his mind, Ordi cursed under his breath, doubting whether any would suffice against such formidable adversaries. Read more – link in comments.

Fun Fact from Research for Chronicles of Ordi While researching for books two and three of Chronicles of Ordi: Brotherhood of the Lost Gems, I came across a gritty detail about medieval survival: warriors often ate rancid meat during desperate journeys, sometimes inducing vomiting to avoid sickness. This inspired a vivid scene in Asheros, where Verdun, Ordi’s stoic warrior brother, showcases his resilience. In book two, Verdun’s unexpectedly large role as a key Brotherhood member shines in the wind-scoured Upper Granites, where the group faces starvation. In the back of a cave, Verdun finds spoiled meat but eats it anyway, grimacing through the foul taste to fill his stomach. This moment, grounded in historical survival practices, highlights Verdun’s toughness and rallies the group, with Mira’s sharp wit and Nimue’s quiet admiration adding depth. I kept the scene brief to maintain the story’s pace, but it underscores the harshness of Asheros’ landscapes. This fun fact didn’t dominate the narrative but added a raw, cinematic layer to Verdun’s character and the Brotherhood’s journey.
