I told my feet to walk away. I told my eyes to stop staring at her.
“The only way in is up?” I asked.
“It sure is. Come on.” Her voice sang the invitation as she positioned herself near the ladder’s top.
She was fetching. Irresistible.
And belonged to some other man, I reminded myself.
I grasped the ladder’s splintery gray sides, ignoring the sharp pains, and set a foot on the bottom rung. Some beefy fiancé might well toss me back to the ground once I made it to the top.
“Here I come,” I said foolishly. In a flash, I reached the top few rungs and paused. There was no heroic way to transition from the ladder to the balcony. My legs were long, but doing the splits between the upper rungs and the railing… I glanced down. “I’m glad men don’t wear skirts.”
“This way.” The blonde sidled to where I should make my leap. No, she didn’t sidle, she bounced.
“How?” I held onto the ladder for dear life.
She chuckled. “One leg at a time.”
If she was younger than I, it wasn’t by much, so surely I could match her strength and agility. I glanced down again.
“Don’t worry,” the beauty assured me. “I do it all the time, and I will help you.”
For some reason, I trusted her. Boosted by her gaiety, I swung a leg to the railing, catching it with my ankle. “I will never make it.” I did the splits from the ladder to where she beckoned me. “I can’t do this.”
“Yes, you can. You have to. Because I need you.”
She needed me? “What about your…”
“My fiancé? Dwayne?” She grabbed me and pulled me by the back of my shirt until my calf made it over the railing. Then a knee, my pant leg bunching above my kneecap and exposing my skinny but hairy leg.
Normally, writers weren’t called upon for their muscle. Sweating profusely, even with her help and exhortations, I clumsily slithered over the rail and onto the balcony floor, landing on my back.
“You did it,” she cheered above me.
Prostrate against worn boards, I gazed up at her grinning face and lovely yellow curls framed by the underside of the old building’s eaves. “We did it,” I corrected her.
“See? We need each other.” The blue of her eyes intensified.
I swallowed at the pleasant sensation of needing each other.
