EXCERPT

Karsh Azarian’s pretentious voice came from the end of the table. “It would appear I am now the only courageous one going it alone.” He held a glass of red wine aloft in our direction, a smug grin splashed across his stupid goateed face. “As it should be, I suppose. Fair play and what not.”

Across from me and next to Olivia Fantucci, Scooter Jablonsky’s attention bounced between Karsh, Jimmy, and I. Then he pointed with his half-full drink glass toward Frederick Volkov and Rod Toft, who were seated on our side of the table to Azarian’s right. “Hey, Freddie boy, y’all been quiet tonight. Whatsa matter, your contest off like a herd of turtles?”

Volkov fixed his hound-dog eyes on Scooter. “Quite the contrary, Burl. Tell me, have you and Spencer made it out of your rooms yet, or are you still wrasslin’ with that devilish first clue?” Volkov finished with an amused laugh and clinked glasses with Toft. “Cheers, my friend.”

Scooter was about to blow when Spencer Fernsby inserted himself in the conversation. “Frederick, throughout my career, I have seen your kind come and go. Usually to prison for insider trading and fraud, I might add.” He raised a water glass to his lips. “My goodness, it would be quite difficult to win the contest from a jail cell, don’t you think?”

Volkov jumped to his feet. Even from my vantage point, I could see the blue vein throbbing in his forehead. “Are you threatening me, Fernsby?”

Fernsby smiled warmly, a contrast to his suddenly stone-cold blue-gray eyes. “That certainly wasn’t my intention. My respectful apologies.”

Jimmy whispered in my ear, “The plot thickens.”

Guest Post:

Topic: Did you have a minor character who insisted on playing a larger role in the story. If so, please tell us about it. And if not, please tell me how you get the characters in your head to behave.

I have a minor character who made her first appearance in my debut novel, Against My Better Judgment. She was so popular with my readers, she has appeared in the second book of the series (Fire & Ice), and now in the third, Lucky Secrets.  She is an octogenarian mystery woman with a very colorful past and a knack for showing up at just the right times in each story. That character is the very fun, very enigmatic, Mrs. Sadie Majelski.

She also happens to be my favorite character because she is so versatile in what she can do for the story, and she allows me to have a ton of fun with her while at the same time, moving the story along. Consider that the little old lady effortlessly pumps iron in the gym; runs on the treadmill and through parking lots and garages; maniacally works the elliptical without breaking a sweat or loss of breath; nimbly clambers up walls in a rock-climbing room; deftly wields a blowtorch; is a part-time bouncer at Sunny Time’s Stein Room; drives a tricked-out monster truck with a full gun rack; knows how to hack security systems ranging from residential to high-end commercial ones; has shadowy links to international syndicates and intelligence agencies; and more. Even my developmental editor, the fabulous Jeni Chappelle, said when she returned the Lucky Secrets manuscript to me, “I still wanna be Mrs. Majelski when I grow up.” How can I not love the old lady!!

So, with a character like Mrs. M, it’s not so much her insisting on playing a larger role in the story, it’s my readers, editors, and me demanding she have a subtle yet important role, lurking in the shadows—watching. Since everybody now is expecting to see Mrs. Majelski, it is my job to put her out there and keep people guessing and asking: “Who the heck is this lady? Really.”

    1. Sorry for the late reply - I've been laid up with a back injury, but all is well now. Regarding your question, my personal observations are always in my writing and will always be so. This is because I am constantly observing people and events, and make notes in my phone that I later transfer to my files. When the time comes for laying out a book, I dig into those files and pull out interesting observations that I can fit into the plot, plus interesting or fun first or last names. I also will drop in the occasional personal experience if it works. For example, in my second book, Fire and Ice, I wrote a hilarious scene that actually happened to me about a crazy guy I called Glasses Guy that was eventually reduced to a half page during the editing process (Chapter 17, page 146).
