BLURB:

Melody is a simple woman with simple needs that include good clean books, safe and intelligible television, and a job that she loves. As far as she’s concerned, she has everything she needs, including a beloved gig as the assistant librarian of her local public library. When a Winter Reads program turns chaotic and Melody is caught in the crossfires of a massive child-induced food fight, her dream job becomes a nightmare – a nightmare that continues into a snow-covered, accident-prone next day. After waking up to a sudden massive snowfall covering her town, she becomes the unwilling victim of a snowball fight between two identical twin brothers. Melody must then decide if she has met her very own Mister Right, or if her perfect life can handle an imperfect interruption. Lighthearted laughs and endearing moments fill this modern romantic comedy by humorist Jennifer Patricia O’Keeffe

EXCERPT

“Well… their hunt for me paid off I guess.” Melody smiled and sipped her drink. “I got my necklace back, I got a wonderful new boyfriend, and… well… I don’t think I’ve shared this news with you yet.”

“You’re getting married?” Cocoa asked, throwing out a wild guess.

“Nope.”

“You’re pregnant!”

“Oh, god no!” Melody exclaimed.

“Well then, what is it?” Cocoa put her hands on her hips and Melody could see she was growing impatient.

“I… think… I’m in love.”

“No!” Cocoa shouted. Her voice was pretty loud and she looked around with a quirky smile as several customers looked her way. Then, she looked at Melody again, not caring who had heard her shout. “Not you, little Miss I’m Happy with My Quiet Little Life?”

“Quiet little life…” Melody rolled her eyes. “You make me sound so boring. But… my life’s not so quiet anymore, and honestly, I’m loving it more than I ever thought I could.”

Cocoa began to sing softly. “You’re in love! Love, love, love, love, love!”

“Oh, hush,” she said and blushed.

“I expect to be Maid of Honor at the wedding,” Cocoa continued. “I’m picturing very tacky beige bridesmaid dresses, a small church service, and lots of hokey pictures of us doing wacky poses in our outfits!”

“Aren’t you rushing things a little?”

“Well… someone has to. If I know you, the two of you haven’t even had –…”

“Don’t even say it!” Melody cut her off. “Good things come to those who wait.”

“He’s going to be gray-haired old man by the time you give up the –…”

“No!” Melody exclaimed and then laughed nervously. “Goodness, Cocoa!”

Cocoa laughed heavily. “Okay, fine. But tell me then what all you two have planned for your one-month anniversary tonight.”

“All I know is he’s taking me out to a restaurant but won’t tell me what it is,” she explained. “And he has something for me, but he won’t tell me what that is either.”

“I bet it’s a ring,” Cocoa noted. “It’s gonna be a ring. He’s going to pop the question. I know it!”

“After just a month? No way,” Melody discouraged. “Maybe a promise ring?”

“A promise ring? Are you both twelve?” Cocoa huffed and grabbed a rag to wipe down the counter. “That’s kid stuff.” She then paused and smiled a little mischievous grin. “By the way…”

“Yes?”

“What did you get him for your one-month anniversary?”

Melody’s smile disappeared and her eyes became concerned. “Is – is that a thing?”

“Yes, girl!” Cocoa exclaimed and put her rag down. “This isn’t the nineteen fifties, you know. Present giving is an equal thing now. He gives you a gift. You give him a gift. It’s called gifting.”

A Wonderful World of Books Guest Post
Jennifer Patricia O’Keeffe Author of ‘Snowfall’ The Life and Times of a Secondary Character Hello, and thank you for stopping by and checking out my guest post for A Wonderful World of Books – a terrific blog that is very gracious to host me. I’m primarily known for being a humorist and writing romantic comedies. In this industry, I’m best known for being in anthologies, but with ‘Snowfall,’ I have my first solo book – something I am very proud of. But, whether what I’m writing is longer or shorter, there is one constant that remains – a secondary character to compliment the direction of my protagonist. Most books have many of these characters, but sometimes, the smaller the cast, the more impactful the writing. In my new book ‘Snowfall,’ I find it best to separate my cast with my protagonist, my love interest, my side characters, and my secondary character. Personally, that secondary character may not appear all the time, but the character is vital to something in the protagonist’s life. In ‘Snowfall,’ that character is Cocoa – owner of Cocoa’s Café and an unexpected but important confidant to my protagonist Melody. Melody is the assistant librarian of a public library that is located just a few spaces down from the café. The first time I wrote about her visit to the café, Cocoa herself wasn’t in the picture. I had no idea who Cocoa was; I only knew the name of the Café because Melody saw it. Later, I’d learn Melody had known the café’s name for a while, but that’s how these things go. Our first experience with Melody in Cocoa’s Café isn’t too great. She has an obnoxious, overly chatty server who can’t stop talking enough to hear anything Melody’s trying to convey. From there, the visit just gets worse, and when the server insults her as she’s leaving, I expected we’d never go inside Cocoa’s Café again. Melody’s a lot kinder and more patient than I am. So, much to my surprise, we were back inside Cocoa’s Café at a different time, and there at the counter was Cocoa herself. The fact that this wasn’t Melody’s first-time meeting Cocoa was evident when their conversation began, and I watched how that friendship had blossomed over a time that I had not been privy to see. I was given glimpses of their friendship when Cocoa’s family was brought up, or when Melody goes to Cocoa for some sage advice. Visits with Cocoa during ‘Snowfall’ seemed to become more comfort-related than ‘comfort-food-related’ and Cocoa became pivotal to some major decisions that Melody had to make. In fact, I’ve gotten to know Cocoa well enough to know that, if I ever did some sort of spin-off or sequel to ‘Snowfall,’ Cocoa would be a vital character, if not the main character. While other side characters, like the other workers at the library or the love interest’s twin brother, are important to the storyline, I consider the secondary character to be pretty high in importance. In my novella ‘My Name is Not Cupid,’ my secondary characters are two people – an old retired husband and wife who rescue my protagonist on the side of the road while she’s trying to get to Hollywood. Throughout the story, that couple provides comfort, support, advice, and much needed love to the protagonist and, without them, she never would have survived the venture. Best friends… cousins… enemies that are pushed together and maybe forced to work together… there is no telling who your secondary character or characters are going to be until they appear and become organically woven through the threads of the story. Thank you for enjoying this moment with me here at A Wonderful World of Books Blog! I do hope you’ll take a chance on my style of romantic comedies and read my latest release ‘Snowfall.’ I promise, it’ll put a smile on your face and a tickle on your funny bone! If you’re interested in reading more of my musings, or my book reviews, movie reviews, or the occasional recipe or household tip I feel the urge to share, please follow my blog at: https://singlegirlsguidetohappiness.blogspot.com/ Much Love and Many Laughs, Jenn. Contributor’s Note: I was given the option of writing about making my characters behave in my head, but I need to make note that the topic was an impossible task. My characters never behave in my head, and I have to remind myself that I’m just typing their story. They are writing it; I’m just watching and recording it. I liken fiction writing to the act of spying on people who don’t really exist. You just never know what’s going to happen next! ~ J.
