Prologue
Sheree
May 2040
I walked out to the gazebo and stared at the beautiful view
ahead of me. I took a deep breath and glanced at the clear blue skies and the
warm sun, wishing my life could be simpler. So many emotions were going through
my mind, especially with my feelings towards Andie and Dexter. I wish I could
be happy for them. A tiny part of me was because I offered the venue space that
my uncle Eric had since their venue was a scam, but after the stunt they
pulled, I didn’t want them to have it, but it was mainly because I was
miserable, and I wanted them to feel the same way.
I continued to stare at the sky when I heard someone
clearing their throat, interrupting my thoughts. I looked over to see Pedro,
the guy I had met at the rehearsal earlier, approaching me. I stared at him,
immediately noticing his dark brown eyes, curly brown hair, and chiseled
features. He was handsome, but I was not looking for a relationship. The last
one I was in, he was in love with someone else, so I could tell relationships
weren’t in the cards for me. Besides, I wouldn’t know what to do in one since I
was not the relationship type. I didn’t show emotions easily, mainly because of
my upbringing.
“I see you needed to get some air, too.”
I smiled. “Just a tad. It was a bit much for me.”
“Me too. Don’t get me wrong, I’m happy for Dex and Andie.
I’m still honored that Dex wants me in his wedding when we barely know each
other, but I’m not too keen on romance, especially since mine went south.”
I stared at him, wondering why he told me this when we
barely knew each other. “So, you hate romance?”
“I never said that; I just don’t like it.”
“I despise it.”
“I doubt that. I heard you offered this venue to Andie and
Dex when they needed it, so you believe in love and romance.”
“My uncle gave it to them. I took it away from them.”
“But you’re here, so that counts for something.”
“Because I was being nosy.”
“I’m sure.”
We stood in silence as I looked at Pedro once more. He
stared at me and smiled.
“Since we’re the only single people during this ceremony,
maybe we should go together.”
I eyed Pedro and shook my head. “I don’t think so.”
“Why not?”
“I guess you didn’t hear me earlier. I don’t do
relationships.”
“I was only suggesting it since neither of us had a date. I
wasn’t asking to go as a couple.”
“My answer is still no. Besides, I’m not even a bridesmaid.
Andie only asked me to step in because you didn’t have anyone.”
“Ouch.”
“It’s the truth. But I may not even come. There’s no point
in me seeing my ex getting married to someone else.”
“You just said you’re happy for them.”
“They’re made for each other. I probably didn’t realize that
before, but seeing how they look at each other, their love for each other is
real. That’s something I probably wouldn’t know in my life.”
“Don’t rule that out. Love can come to you when you least
expect it.”
“That’s the motto you live by?”
“I do. Even when I may have given up, I know it can happen.”
“At least you do because I don’t.”
That’s why I didn’t believe in fairytales or happily ever
afters; they’re untrue. It never was and never would be.
Pedro gave me an encouraging glance as I looked towards the
sky. My inner calm returned as I thought about Pedro’s theory, wondering if he
was right. I wanted to believe him, but, with my luck, I realized it was all a
delusion.
