Ode to a Pug
by Jill Rosen
Genre: Children’s
Picture Book, Pets
A
precocious pug delights in shenanigans which drive her frazzled owner
to declare she will give her pup away!
Laugh along with the snorting,
snoring and gaseous clown of the canine world as its owner struggles
to reign in the messes and mayhem of a new addition. But there is
nothing that a few licks and cuddles can't fix, right?
A true delight that any family
can relate to, Ode to a Pug is full of heart... and a lot of slobber.
"Ode to a Pug is a sweet and funny exploration of what
unconditional love looks like."

Colorfully illustrated
Beautifully written
Let's All Take a ‘PUGout’!
With Ode to a Pug being published, I had an opportunity to share with children in a fun way some of the evidence-based behavioral tips for managing impulses and emotions. I used our lovable pug to inspire the creation of the mnemonic ‘PUGout’ (a play on the common word for a pause in the action, “timeout”), for bundling some recommended steps to take when feeling extremely frustrated, angry, or upset, or if someone is feeling that way with you. Just take a PUGout!
P = Pause
U = Understand
G = Gather
Pause - do something to take a pause from the situation. For example, go for a walk, count to 10, take 5 deep breaths, take a drink of water(2).
In Ode to a Pug the mom takes a pause by cleaning.
Understand - during the pause, we take the time to understand 3 things: what we are feeling, why we are feeling that way, and it's ok to have those feelings(1).
Readers of the book can watch the mom go through the understanding process in her head, which is one of the main reasons Ode to a Pug is written in the mom's voice. I wanted the pug (or child) to see what the mom is really thinking.
Gather - gather or prepare ourselves to go back and address the challenging situation by releasing the energy or ‘heat’ created in our bodies by the strong emotions. We can do this through things like a burst of exercise (e.g., 10 jumping jacks or push-ups), eating something we like, listening to a favorite song, drawing or writing, and last but definitely not least, asking for help(3,4).
In Ode to a Pug, the mom goes through various tasks, as well as relaxing or enjoyable activities, in order to resolve her stressful state.
