Land of Dreams

Once Upon a Princess Book 3

Formula for Fairy Tale Love: 1 adventurous Heroine + 1 tortured-but-noble Hero = Happily-Ever-After.

In the rich and fertile land called Montrose, humans and creatures of magic exist together in a complex web of harmony…and deceit.

Willem was created of magic and trapped in the Land of Dreams by a curse in which he shared his gargoyle form with Eduardo. When Eduardo freed himself from the evil spell his jealous half-brother Erokan cast on him, Willem survived and was given a new life by the faeries. Haunted by the duality of his previous existence as well as the woman he and Eduardo both fell in love with while hexed, Willem, now a gargoyle shifter, meets the daughter of Lord Montrose. Compassionate, graceful and adamant about marrying for love and not riches, Cicely is far more wondrous than her outside beauty suggests. Suddenly, everything he's ever wanted is within his grasp. But he isn't the only man who longs to capture her.

Aware that Cicely descends from the royal line and was hidden away as a child to keep her magical ability a secret, a mysterious stranger intends to bend the powerful fire elemental to his will. To succeed, he has only to dominate Willem, still anguished by the curse that trapped him…and easily beguiled by a fair princess.

Cicely knows she possesses magical ability, but her origins are a mystery even to her. She loves her family and her land. Falling in love with the courageous, self-sacrificing Willem may be the key to awakening…or unleashing…something formidable buried deep inside her.

Beauty & the Faun excerpt

He smiled as he covered her with the blanket. "You should know that I normally don't find beautiful young maidens in the forest after midnight either. Especially naked ones," he said. "You are a maiden, aren't you?"

It took a few seconds for her to catch his meaning, and when she did, heat spread across her face. Kayla pulled the blanket up so that it rested just below her chin. "Yes, I am."

A smile spread across his full lips, completely disarming her. "Ah, then. I was right. It will be a very lucky gentleman who tastes you for the first time."

Now the heat was cutting a path downward, waking up a feeling that she'd never experienced before. Was this some enchantment?

Del leaned closer and kissed her cheek. "You have a fire, my lady. Whoever wins your heart and ignites your passion will be at your mercy."

"What…what do you mean, sir?" Why was she trembling all of a sudden?

He laughed. "Nothing is by chance. Perhaps you and I met for just such a purpose."

"Are you saying…you're saying that you will ignite my passion? You think highly of yourself, sir." She gripped the blanket just in case he thought about pulling it off her.

"Stop fighting so hard to be insulted," he said. "Here in the Great Forest, we enjoy life and love. Good night, Kayla."

"Where are you going?" she asked. How dare he say those things then walk away!

"Downstairs. I was on my way to a party before we met. I'll see you in the morning. Sweet dreams."

Heart of Stone excerpt -

Leesa headed up the stairs and stopped at the 2nd floor landing. Eduardo and Erokan's rooms had been on this floor. Dust was everywhere, but otherwise the furnishings were just as they'd been left. Varmont's bedroom, private study and library were on the 3rd floor. Most likely he would've hidden some of his valuables there. She went upstairs to check. The doors to the Duke's room, study and library were open. But the fourth door was closed. The treasure room, perhaps?

She opened the door and stepped inside. Strangely, this room wasn't as dusty as the others.

The air was heavy with perfume. Across from the door was a folding screen decorated with blue and yellow flowers. Behind it she could make out the base of a claw-foot tub.

To her surprise, the entire room had a feminine feeling, from the huge bed covered with blush pink coverlets and plush furs to the gold-trimmed white furniture. Even the jewel-encrusted skylight above her had its own beauty, reflecting colorful sprinkles of light over the pale stone walls.

A white cabinet with glass doors caught her attention. The shelves held glass bottles of different shapes and sizes. Some had liquids inside, others were empty. What were these? Perfumes? Or maybe potions.

The Duke used magic. Maybe this was where he'd kept his enchantments. Would they be worth anything? Possibly. But just as Leesa reached out to open the cabinet, the door slammed behind her.

Startled, she spun around. She was alone. Who had closed it? Leesa ran to the door and gripped the handle, expecting the door to open as easily as it had when she'd come in. But it didn't. She pulled and banged on it, but it wouldn't budge.

She was locked in.

EXCERPT FROM ONCE UPON A PRINCESS: LAND OF DREAMS

“A year ago you used the stars to cast the spell that freed Eduardo. A spell that used the constellation of The Archer, Willem. I think it’s important that you’ll–”

“Lady Agnes! Where are you?”

Startled, Willem turned in the direction of the feminine voice. She was in the doorway, surrounded by bright sunlight. All he saw at first was a silhouette, then movement as she stepped inside.

“Oh, I didn’t know you had someone with you.” She was standing by the candles now, bathed in soft light. Her dark hair fell to her shoulders, framing her face. Her smile sent a shock through him, just as her gaze pinned him to the spot. He’d never seen her before, but there was something about her that was familiar.

“Lady Cicely,” Lady Agnes said. “I was going to visit you later. Let me introduce you to my protégé, Willem. He’s a retired soldier and he’s versed in astronomy.”

“Oh, father will be happy to hear that,” she replied, keeping her eyes on Willem. “He’s quite taken with astronomy these days. I’m not sure why.”

“How convenient that we have someone to assist him, then.” Lady Agnes squeezed his arm. “You haven’t said anything.”

“I’m sorry…I didn’t intend to be rude.” Willem bowed to Cicely. When he straightened up their eyes met again. “I’m very happy to make your acquaintance, Lady Cicely.”

“Happy to meet you too.” She lowered her eyes, then clasped her hands as though she wasn’t quite sure what to do next. “Um…I…maybe I should be getting back.”

“You just got here.” Why had he said that? It had just slipped out.

Traps Aspiring Writers Should Watch Out For

Aspiring fiction writers often encounter common traps that can slow their progress and creativity. One of the most prevalent pitfalls is the fear of failure, which can prevent writers from taking risks and exploring new ideas. This fear can lead to self-doubt and procrastination, ultimately stalling the writing process. Another trap is perfectionism, where writers get caught up in trying to create the perfect story or perfect sentence, leading to frustration and writer's block. It's important for us to remember that writing is a process, and it's okay to make mistakes along the way.

Another trap is imposter syndrome, where we doubt their own abilities. This can be especially challenging for writers who are just starting out. It's important for us to remember that everyone starts out with no experience (and no published books or stories).

Additionally, comparison can be a trap for writers when we constantly compare ourselves to more established authors. It's important to focus your own writing journey instead of feeling you aren’t following the same path as others.

When you feel called to be a writer, don’t let these traps get in your way. Keep going. Keep expressing your creativity. There are readers waiting for your stories.

Top Ten Reasons I Love Fairy Tales

Life Lessons: Fairy tales often contain valuable life lessons and morals that can be applied to various situations in real life.

Magical Settings: These stories transport readers to enchanting and whimsical worlds filled with mystical creatures and fantastical landscapes.

Universal Appeal: These tales transcend cultural boundaries, resonating with people from diverse backgrounds across the globe. There are versions of popular fairy tales that have been told in just about every culture and country.

Symbolism: Many elements in fairy tales are symbolic, offering deeper meanings and insights into human nature.

Happy Endings: The promise of a happy ending is comforting in a world where life can be so unpredictable.

Inspiration: These timeless tales inspire creativity, which is why retellings are so popular.

Royalty: Not to say that every fairy tale has a royal family, but it’s always nice to have a Prince (or Princess) Charming show up at some point.

Fairy Tales are for Children and Adults: Fairy tales are popular books to read to children, but adults love them too. They are timeless stories that you can read at any age and still enjoy them.

They can have different Meanings: When I was researching fairy tales for my novellas, I was surprised to learn the origins of Beauty and the Beast. One version was written in France in the 1700's and was said to reflect the anxieties of young women who might not know what to expect in marriage. Would their betrothed be a beast or a charming hero?

Transformation: Usually, characters will have a transformation of some kind, as when the beast becomes a man, or the heroine transforms from mermaid to human.
