Healing the Wounded Warrior
With all her verdant magic as a forest
fairy, the Emerald Princess poured her spirit as a guérisseuse celtique
into healing the wounded warrior from Cornwall.
Finally, on the fourth day, when the
morning sun glistened in the sparkling waters of the fountain, Tristan’s
eyelids fluttered. Issylte leaned over him, his brow
cool now that the fever had broken. He opened the brilliant blue eyes that
she’d seen in the vision.
As she gazed into them, the earth tilted.
Her heart raced; her bearings were lost. In the depths of his eyes, she
glimpsed a fountain in a forest. The turquoise waters of the ocean. An
underground well encased by sacred stones. She, the forest fairy, was immersed
in the blue waters of the warrior’s eyes, the waves emanating from him flowing
through her, cleansing her. Beckoning her.
In Tristan’s eyes, Issylte glimpsed a black
bird—a sea raven—soaring over an open sea, hovering now before her. A small
dove fluttered in her breast, called forth from her soul. White wings unfurled
as she took flight, rising into the azure sky alongside the black
seabird—-floating together through the diaphanous clouds scattered over the
vast ocean.
In the breadth of an instant, Issylte was
bound to this warrior, the Blue Knight of Cornwall, as if fate had indeed
entwined them. Through the windows of his eyes, she peered into his soul, her
own blending with his, as if they were the forest and the ocean, encircled now
within the three layers of protective stones, the holy trinity of sacred
elements of the Goddess.
The Lady of the Mirrored Lake
“When I had Lamdefer forged, I also had this beautiful sword
crafted for you, Issylte. I have named it Emeraldfire. Forged in flame, adorned
with the deepest green gemstone to represent you. The Emerald Princess of
Ireland.” He extended his hand to her, into which she placed her own, rising
from the table to stand before him. He then offered her the sword—extending the
grip for her to grasp. “Take it, Issylte. It is yours.” Placing himself behind
her, Tristan instructed her how to hold the weapon. Then, guiding her arm with
his, he helped her to sweep and slice through the air as she became familiar
with its feel. “I plan to train with Lancelot’s finest knights, honing myself
back into battle condition.” Circling in front of her to meet her gaze, he
grinned, “And I plan to train you, my princess. To become a warrior, like me.”
She shot him an incredulous look.
He elaborated, a twinkle in his
eye. “You already have excellent equestrian skills. That is most important.
We’ll begin by having you ride toward a target, striking it with a wooden
sword, like I once did as a squire. When you have perfected that skill, we’ll
graduate to using Emeraldfire—sheathed at first—until you learn to strike with
deadly accuracy.”
Beaming at him in astonishment,
Issylte remarked, “Never before has anyone offered to train me. I have always
been treated as a fragile princess who needed protection and pampering. But
this…” she said, gesturing to the weapons and clothing, “is the first time
anyone has taken me seriously in my desire to challenge the queen. No one else
has ever considered the importance of developing my strength…and the ability to
fight.”
Issylte walked up to him and placed
a hand on his broad chest. His heart pounded under her trembling palm. Filled
with gratitude and joy, she raised her eyes up to his. “You have promised to
lead my army. To fight at my side. But Tristan, training me to become a warrior
queen is the best gift you could ever offer. Thank you, from the bottom of my
heart.” She stood on her tiptoes to kiss him lightly on the lips. He pulled her
to his chest and held her close. She could feel and hear his thumping pulse.
Verdant magic roared in her veins.
Memories of that unforgettable
afternoon flooded him. They’d
reconnected—physically, emotionally, spiritually—after long, tortuous weeks
apart. A wondrous wave of love, lust, and longing crashed over him as he
crushed her in his arms. Devoured her luscious lips. Caressed her beautiful
body. Inhaled her forest fairy essence deep into his damaged soul. Tonight
could very well be their last together. He would make it as memorable as that
afternoon in the sacred cave. Find a quiet spot for them to be alone. Not too
far from the Tribe. But far enough. He pulled her tight, pressed his body
against hers, and whispered into her left ear. “By the Goddess, I yearn for
you. Tonight, my love. A night to remember. Always.”
She raised her radiant face to his.
In the depths of her verdant gaze, he glimpsed églantines—the soft pink
wild roses of the Hazelwood Forest. Le Miroir aux Fées—the Mirrored Lake
she’d defended to become a Priestess of Dana. Where she’d retrieved the orb he
would use tomorrow to challenge the wizard.
In her emerald eyes, Tristan saw the Forest of Brocéliande, where they
were married in the Triple Trinity of their Celtic wedding. The white dove who
had flown to save him, imprisoned in the dungeon of Tintagel. In the breadth of
an instant, he saw countless images. His
father’s castle, le Château d’ Or. A thatched cottage in an enchanted
forest. The sacred scabbard she’d crafted for his Elven sword Azeldraig. He,
the Dragon Knight of Avalon, whose sea raven soul was eternally entwined with
hers. His Wild Rose. His green, golden goddess. His Emerald Fairy.
As a high school French teacher, I used puppets to illustrate the medieval
legend of "Tristan et Yseult" to my French IV students as part of our
study of the Middle Ages. We always read the novel in French, listened to the
soundtrack from the French musical, and watched the French version of the film
with James Franco and Sophia Myles.
I always took my students to the state competition where they performed a
French I play I had written, "Yseult la Belle et Tristan la Bête"--a
combination of the medieval French legend of "Tristan et Yseult"
(Tristan and Isolde in English) with the fairy tale, "Beauty and the
Beast".
Last summer, I had an epiphany--to incorporate that play into a
trilogy. A retelling of the classic French tragedy of "Tristan et
Yseult", blended with my love of medieval knights, Arthurian legends, and
dark fairy tales from the enchanted Forest of Brocéliande in la Bretagne
(Brittany in English), birthplace of Merlin the Magician, Viviane, the Lady of
the Lake, and Lancelot du Lac.
My trilogy-- "The Wild Rose and the Sea Raven", “The Lady of the
Mirrored Lake”, and “The Emerald Fairy and the Dragon Knight”-is a compilation
of my years of studying French literature, my numerous trips to France--
exploring troglodyte caves, medieval pilgrimage sites, châteaux of the Loire
Valley, Normandy, Bretagne, and Provence--and my love for myths and legends.
Enthralled
with legends of medieval knights and ladies, dark fairy tales and
fantasies about Druids, wizards and magic, Jennifer Ivy Walker always
dreamed of becoming a writer. She fell in love with French in junior
high school, continuing her study of the language throughout college,
eventually becoming a high school teacher and college professor of
French.
As a high school teacher, she took her students every
year to the annual French competition, where they performed a play
she had written, "Yseult la Belle et Tristan la Bête"--an
imaginative blend of the medieval French legend of "Tristan et
Yseult" and the fairy tale "Beauty and the Beast",
enhanced with fantasy elements of a Celtic fairy and a wicked
witch.
Her debut novel, "The Wild Rose and the Sea
Raven"--the first of a trilogy-- is a blend of her love for
medieval legends, the romantic French language, and paranormal
fantasy. It is a retelling of the medieval French romance of "Tristan
et Yseult", interwoven with Arthurian myth, dark fairy tales
from the enchanted Forest of Brocéliande, and otherworldly elements
such as Avalonian Elves, Druids, forest fairies and magic.
