Hey Authors, Here’s A Popular Book Marketing Roadmap

One of the toughest parts of book marketing is finding a good starting point and then deciding where to focus your efforts. Below is a suggested book marketing roadmap based on the research that my co-author, Julie Murkette and I, have determined based on years of experience in book marketing and current book marketing and publishing trends.

START =>  Identify Your Message, Your Audience and Your Hook

Before any book promotion plans are made, we feel that the best starting point is for authors to get to know their book – we mean, really get to know their book.   Dig in and evaluate your book’s message, audience, and hook.

Message – What are you trying to share with your book - fiction or non-fiction?

Audience – Who is your intended reader?  Who do you believe is going to search out this book and buy it?

Hook – What makes your book special or different?

Do your examination and determinations, write them out, and keep it by you as you create all of your book marketing plans.

=> Create a Media Kit

A media kit is a collection of book promotion tools. We feel that a headshot and a press release are musts but the other press kit items can be created as needed or desired.  Other media kit items may include: an author bio, an endorsement sheet, a sell sheet, an interview question list, a postcard, and a brochure.  Media Kit items are used to pitch media and to let them know about your book in order to do a story, interview or mention of you or your book.

=> Create a Website

Authors need a basic website. Why? As you promote your book, media will want to know how to contact you and will want to learn a little more about you and your book.  The website is where they will go to get this information.  Use your name as the website name.

Now that you have your basic promotion tools are created: it is time to create your book marketing plan – the promotion items that you will select to promote your book.

The Second Half of Your Book Marketing Road Map

Below are common book promotion options that you could select and add to your book marketing plan.

ð Pre-Launch Stops On Your Map

Advanced Reader Copy (ARC) outreach to book industry reviewers and early endorsers is a great way to get the word out about your book early and to gather reviews.

Distributor pre–publication outreach – Depending on where your book and eBook is going to be distributed (sold), you may find pre-pub ad opportunities for your book that your distributor offers.

ð Media Outreach for Review, Interview, or Mention

Research media contacts who you think may be interested in your message or book and then pitch to them via email or by sending a book to them.  Here is where the work you did in message, audience, and hook pays off.  We are talking about pitching to media (newspaper, tv, radio, magazine, podcasts, and online outlets) to use your message as content for their publication in the form of a story or mention or review of your book.

Launch Stops on Your Map

ð Online Book Promotion

BookBub, as an example, offers online promotion for authors to share their book with millions of BookBub subscribers.  The online promotion opportunities that I love the most are targeted to readers who already buying and reading books in your genre.

ð Online Book Ad

Many book industry organizations and book industry publications offer ad space for authors to purchase for placement in their catalogs, magazines, online sites.  Each ad opportunity should be researched to see if it is a good fit for YOUR book and worth your ad dollars (i.e. IBPA, Ingram Spark, Publishers Weekly, Writers Digest, Foreword Magazine).

Amazon, B&N, Book Bub, Facebook, and Instagram, etc offer ad opportunities, too.  You have to create an image for the ad and then select the parameters for the ad placement (type, cost, length of time). There are online tutorials that explain how setting up online ad placement works.

ð Book Promotion Sites

There are many book promotion sites out there where you submit your book and for a fee, your book is listed for all of the world to see and purchase it. In some cases, you must offer your book for a heavy discount or even for free.  The hope is that the massive exposure of your book will catapult book sales.  These promotion site offers tend to help authors who promote a series of books. (i.e., first book in the series is free, new devoted readers are created) Here are a few of the sites that offer deals as of this writing: Bargain Booksy, Fussy Librarian, Robin Reads, Book Gorilla.

Like social media ads, I feel that you really need to understand how these book promotion sites work to decide if they are a worthwhile fit for your marketing plan and budget.

Post–Launch Stops and On-Going Stops

ð Social Media

Pick one or two social media channels that you already spend time on and enjoy spending time on.  Keep your audience informed of your book and events. Offer great, targeted information for your followers to keep them coming back for more.

ð Adjust Your Route

Adjust your roadmap as needed.

You are never locked in… if one direction doesn’t work, pivot. Stay with it and have fun.
