Sounds Like Love offers readers an engaging story of a cat that holds unexpectedly special abilities, a grandchild learning to care for a pet while missing a significant person in her life, and an emotional roller coaster of love, empathy, and revised connections that stem from their relationship.’
"Suddenly she wasn’t thinking about how she felt anymore; she was wondering how the cat was feeling – she felt compassion for the cat. All through her childhood she had disliked cats because her parents had paraded them in front of her and it had made her feel second best. But now, this cat was looking for a friend. How could Wendy hope for people to understand her when she wasn’t trying to understand this cat? “Empathy,” Wendy said out loud to herself. “That’s what the world needs. More empathy.”
What is another passion of yours alongside writing?
I’m really interested in the natural world and enjoy taking macro photographs of insects.
I started a non-profit called the Pollinator Protection Fund to help support habitat creation for endangered Western Monarch butterflies and other pollinators such as native bees.
I really enjoy learning about native plants and reading studies about Monarch Butterflies. One of the most fulfilling things is creating a Monarch Butterfly and Pollinator habitat garden that the public can enjoy. In these gardens, it is very rewarding to watch people read our educational signs and smile with joy as butterflies glide past them.
Gardens that thrive with life and shine with colorful plants take us out our of our heads and into the present moment as we observe creatures in nature going about their business.
There’s so much to consider when planting for butterflies and bees - which native plants are their host plants, what types of conditions do the plants like, how many plants to install in a garden, and where, what type of soil do we have - is it healthy? And so on. The learning curve is definitely enjoyable and I realize that it never stops. There is just so much to learn!
When I see Monarch butterflies circling a garden we have created, it makes the journey of transforming an overgrown and unused piece of land completely worthwhile and magical
