Book 7 Shahira and the Flying Elfs
“How’re you doing, Shahira,” he screeched softly, when Huntan saw her eyes flutter open. In silence, she pushed her torso from the ground with head hung low. She stayed like that for a long moment and then stood up shakily to walk toward the lake.
At the edge of the lake, she took one look at herself again and unloosed a pitiful howl before tearing at and discarding feathers as if they were poisonous beasts that would turn and bite her. Her eyes remained locked on the water’s surface that indifferently revealed the true Shahira.
She tore the clumps of feathers from her chest and hips, and hurled them away. She paused for a moment when her hands reached halfway to her head. Huntan waited, out of her way, but close enough to protect her if the need arose—even from herself.
Her trembling hands finally reached her face. She tore free the feathers in one swipe and then plunged into the deep, cold water of the lake.
After an agonizing moment, Huntan decided to go in after her. Just then, six eagles landed near his side so he drew his wings back, still in mid-flap.
“Where is she?” asked the older one, obscuring his view of the lake and Shahira. “Right there,” Huntan shrieked defiantly, and their eyes followed his to the edge of the calm lake and the pile of feathers.
“Good. Jarlyn took care of her.”

Book 1 The Elf and the Princess
Somewhere in the Serra Mountains, in a pitch-black cave, a set of light feet moved quietly toward a figure curled in a bedroll near the fire pit. A loud snore came from the knave that lay there.
“Good, he hasn’t heard me,” the shadow murmured.
One of the two short swords held by the shadow rose and fell with a mighty swing toward the sleeping figure. At the last moment, the sleeping figure turned over to his left shoulder, and the metal struck the stone around the fire pit, vibrating the would-be attacker’s arm to its shoul¬der. Sparks flew and rekindled the dry, leftover wood from the past night’s supper, and the renewed smell of burning wood arose. The sleeping figure didn’t blink awake, nor hear the fire crackle.
The new, soft light revealed a small, muscular assail¬ant in dirty black pants and a shirt too big for its wearer. The sleeves became stretched as the wearer strained to strike again, showing a hint of the lean, yet muscular, arms. A small moment later, a loud slap echoed in the cave, as the sword connected with the sleeping figure’s rump, and he sent a fowl scream toward the night sky.
“I should kill you for that,” Donian screamed and turned the other way, covering his head with the pelt he used for warmth.
Two bedrolls could now be seen at either side of the fire. One belonged to Donian; the other lay empty at the moment. Its occupant stood swinging two swords skill¬fully, complete attention riveted on the figure in the neigh¬boring bedroll.
“Come, you yellow-bellied mongrel,” came the cry. “Defend yourself.”
Donian’s soft snore told the sword wielder that the knave had paid no mind to her insult.
Put out by such disrespect, the small figure reached for the skin Donian used for his cover and pulled hard on it. In the same move, the small figure also kicked the war¬rior’s sword toward him, and the metal pommel hit Donian on his head.
“Now you’re going to get it.” In one quick twist Donian stood and faced his attacker, though the sudden move¬ment caused him to totter on his feet.
The small warrior crossed the two swords and caught Donian’s swinging blade there. For a brief moment they stared. In a flash, the small warrior pushed the older warrior off balance with a foot, and he tottered backward. Only his shadow followed him to the floor.

1. Tell us 3 fun facts about yourself?

I am twin

I adopted a child

I speak Spanish

2. How long have you been a writer or known that was something you wanted to do?

I started writing more than twenty years ago and have published some thirty books in different genres. Mostly Young Adult.

3. Tell me about your current project?

I am in the middle of A Distressed Princess which is book 10 in my Royal Romance Series. It will be published in two years.

4. Where do you receive your inspiration or ideas for your books?

Life, movies, and imagination. The play Aida inspired my published book, Kingdom by the Sea. Lord of the Rings inspired my elf’s books including the giant eagles in Shahira & the Flying elfs. Emerine’s nightmare, my Middle Grade electronic book, was inspired by a challenge in an online author’s group. One time I got the idea to write a Roman romance during zumba. I have done the research but I haven't written the book yet. I have about three paragraphs to remind me what it's all about, but is all.

5. Why did you choose to self-publish? Or go with the publisher you are with?

First I was so busy writing that it was my husband who decided that we should publish my books. I loved the idea, so he did the research and then we talked about it and chose a publishing company that would give me the freedom I wanted.

Another reason is because English is my second language and I felt quite threatened by the many awesome authors out there that speak the language quite well. I didn’t feel I could win against them so self publishing became my style. However, I have quite a few articles in magazines and Anthologies, which makes me a hybrid author.

One more reason is that I had no idea what I was doing when we published my first book. It was because of publishing The Elf and the Princess that I learned the rules for a good writer. It was the best decision we ever made. It was then that I found writer’s groups and learned many things to make that one and all the book after it better. I am still learning and making every new book better than the last one. Can I compare to Tolkien? I doubt it…just give me a hundred years and I will be there.

6. How often do you write?

Every day…except my books. Sometimes I don’t get to them. Promoting takes a long time and a lot of writing and is the thing I don't like about being an author.

7. What are some of your favorite books?

Lord of the Rings by far, Narnia, Harry Potter, Nancy Drew, and Hardy boys and quite a few cozy murder mysteries.

8.  What do you hate to read?

Labels and instruction manuals. I do very badly with Psychology and tax manuals. Anything else is a go for me.

9. If you could co-write a book with another author, who would it be?

All my stories come complete to me and I would have a hard time letting someone else into my world. I actually cooperated in a chain story by many authors and it was awesome. I never saw the finished product but it was inspiring to be part of it. However that is quite different than cooperating with another author in a whole book.
