Genre: Epic Fantasy

"Not darkness, not light, perhaps something in between, and is claimed by the darkness...as theirs. Though being saved by the light, that which is saved must in turn save the world..."
Darshun Luthais has never experienced the Nasharin Frenzy—the unbending will to challenge a stronger opponent, no matter the cost. He doesn’t know what he will transform into, has never bonded with an elemental crystal and has never seen any of the unearthly creatures his father talks about. Even though he’s an infant in Nasharin years, his life consists of nothing but constant training, striving to unlock the sleeping power his so-called accursed race is born with.
But all that changes when he is pursued by a Dream Assassin in the dead of night. What he witnesses will forever change his outlook on life and lead him on a quest only the strongest can complete.
The Coming of the Light
Guardian Trilogy Book 2
The Wizard Crystals of the Elements have fallen into the hands of the Demon Lord Abaddon, reshaped to evil and forever corrupted they no longer can serve the Light. Abaddon now patiently waits in his northern kingdom for the coming of Saruinkai—the evening when the greatest spirits of Darkness rule the skies, and when he will unleash the power of the crystals against their own elements, sweeping destruction across the earth.
The Light's hope now lies in the young Nasharin warrior Darshun Luthais—the chosen Guardian, for he is the key to stopping Abaddon's black magic and end the war once and for all. But to do so he must cross over into Abaddon’s kingdom, and that means destroying the one who guards the border, a fallen angelic Throne—the secret to Asgoth's three-hundred-year Rule and invincibility.
Led by the elvish lord Caelestias, Darshun and his companions must seek out and destroy the Throne, encounter a witch, and a horde of other vile creatures, only to stir up the entirety of Asgoth, coming face to face with them, a battle that will determine the fate of the world.
“…a sign to tell this overruling darkness that the Light is coming. Let them be the ones to try and pass through us for once. Their ungodly Rule and ways of cruelty has gone on far too long. Let them feel the terror they love to inflict in others…just this once…” ~Darshun Luthias~
Piercing the Darkness
Guardian Trilogy Book 3
While the Demon Lord Abaddon prepares to cast the Spell of Destruction and wipe out the glories of the earth for his own void of evil, Darshun Luthais, after a long oppressive journey, attempts to eradicate the source of his dark magic, the sacrificial Unholy Altar. But when the Dragon Gods unleash their barricade of fire the Delibious—a mystic realm of darkness, flames and witchery—Darshun must find a way through without tearing his soul from existence and save the earth from the coming annihilation.
Can you, for those who don't know you already, tell something about yourself and how you became an author?
Of course! As far back as I can remember I’ve always had a creative side. As a child, I used to create my own comic books. Nothing like Marvel or DC, mind you, but the point is I was creating stories from a very early age. Ha, I’d also take my Thundercats and Masters of the Universe toys and make them into my own characters. I’d come up with a hero, a plot, enemies to face and one final boss. My parents would see me crawling around the house playing out my story with these figures. Couches and chairs were mountains, the bath tub the ocean and the floor the woodlands. It was fun!
Entering my teens I found a deep love in music, especially heavy metal from the early 1980’s up through the early 2000’s. 19’th century style classical music is a love of mine too, especially pieces that sound like fantasy battles or chaos. Basil Poledouris from the 1982 Conan the Barbarian soundtrack comes to mind. And believe it or not, I actually love pop and even a bit of funk music, especially the classic tune by En Vogue, My Loving (You’re Never Gonna Get It) Something sassy about that song.
I’m 43 years old and I’ve been playing electric guitar since I was 15. I also write my own music.
Creative writing has always been a love of mine. I never had much interest in sports or automobiles. Sure, I know a little bit, but I couldn’t tell you the names of famous quarterbacks or talk for hours about rebuilding an engine block. Creativity has always been my thing in both literature and music. Inspired by authors such as J.R.R. Tolkien, Octavia E Butler and C.S. Lewis (to name a few), I too decided I wanted to create my own vivid world within the imagination…and on paper of course.
I didn’t look around at what genre was most popular in hopes to make a quick buck. I just wanted to write a story that I personally would love to read. A story with not only tons of action and warrior battles, but also filled with heavy emotion. A world where you feel like you’ve made friends with the characters and are a bit sad when the book comes to an end. You miss them!
I’ve always loved classic Good versus Evil tales. True they are a dime a dozen, filled with similar tropes and sometimes a bit cliché. You know, light versus darkness, one chosen character to rid the world of this monstrous evil, magical items, etc. etc. However, just when you think you’ve read something like this before, as soon as you’re enveloped into the story, you see how the tale carries its own uniqueness. Of course, there will be similarities, I can find that in just about every bestselling epic fantasy/sci-fi I read, but each story carries its own flair.
I love when a villain or even a hero begins to question their path, wondering if the task they are trying to accomplish is the right thing to do. Perhaps the Light has a point? Perhaps the Darkness has a point, and looking a little deeper, maybe, just maybe the Light (or whom we call our heroes), isn’t so perfect after all. Besides, all of us know the world is far beyond mere black and white. So, I took all my thoughts, likes and influences and molded them together and out came my book Prophecy of the Guardian: Book One, Guardian Trilogy.
What is something unique/quirky about you?
Happy-go-lucky, dorky, goofy, love doing silly things to make others laugh; too many to name. I’m one of a kind. 😊
Tell us something really interesting that's happened to you!
When I was five years old, I wet the bed one night. Mom always said a half a glass of milk before bed from then on, no more juice or liquid candy (soda). Anyway, as my bed was drying out (after it was washed, of course), I slept in my brother’s bed that night. Sometime during that night I woke up and realized I had to use the bathroom. As I turned around, about to climb out of bed there was this huge figure in my room. I have no idea what it was. It was quite wide and long, floating, shining green and white, and had a face. It just stared at me. I stared back at it for about 5 or 6 seconds, maybe longer. Then I laid back down, faced the wall, closed my eyes and as sweat poured down my brow I kept whispering “please go away, please go away.”
Now I have no idea if it was a dream. I clearly and simply just remember getting up to use the bathroom, so I didn’t pee in my brother’s bed too. I wasn’t afraid of anything, didn’t wake from any nightmare. I just got up, turned around and saw it…whatever “it” was. Perhaps an apparition, perhaps an interdimensional being, perhaps an alien or maybe just a hallucination. I don’t know, but it has always stuck with me. To this day I can see it clearly in my mind.
Where were you born/grew up at?
I was born in upstate NY and grew up all over Columbia County. My family moved around a lot.
If you knew you'd die tomorrow, how would you spend your last day?
Pizza! With pepperoni and extra cheese and cooked lightly done!!
What are you passionate about these days?
I’m passionate about my writing and my music. Also giving my little 8-year-old boy the world.
What do you do to unwind and relax?
I used to have some craft beers and watch an intriguing documentary, something about quantum physics, how this or that is made, even supernatural stories. Lately though I’ve switched over to delicious herbal teas instead of beer as I watch my shows.
How to find time to write as a parent?
Early morning. I’m an early bird anyway, so it’s nice to write when all is quiet in my house. Just me and my German Shephard.
When did you first consider yourself a writer?
Well, it’s not just being a writer, I think I’ve always been a creator. Even as a child I used to write/draw my own comic books or go on an adventure throughout my house with my action figure toys. Ha!
I love creating stories, writing my own music with my electric guitar, and I even love cooking and baking. I created my own style of ice cream pies that everyone seems to love. One of my favourite foods is also a creation of mine, spaghetti squash lasagna. It’s loaded with my own blend of spices, a good quality tomato sauce, freshly shredded mozzarella, pepperoni and ricotta cheese! Don’t knock it until you try it! 😊
Do you have a favorite movie?
That’s a hard one. Probably Rocky 1976. It’s a very passionate flick, the chemistry between the characters and the ups and downs (mostly downs the first half of the movie) of Rocky’s life.
Which of your novels can you imagine made into a movie?
Oh because of the technology in special effects we have today, in 2022, my Guardian trilogy! The battles, the magic, all of it I think would look fantastic on the big screen!
As a writer, what would you choose as your mascot/avatar/spirit animal?
Maybe this is cliché, but I’d choose a female alpha wolf.
J.W. Baccaro is the author of Prophecy of the Guardian and Blood Dreams. Always a lover of creativity, from works of literature to writing music with his electric guitar; even baking and cooking. When not working on his next story or lost in a good book, J.W. enjoys kicking back with a couple of tasty craft beers and binging on Kaiju movies, 80’s action flicks, Japanese animation and slasher films (particularly the one involving a hockey mask). Heck, he even enjoys a good romantic comedy. He lives in upstate NY with his wife Melissa, his son Alexander, his German Shepherd and his three cats.
