Finding time to write as a parent…
I signed by first book contract with my son was two and my daughter was seven. They’re fifteen and twenty now. When they were smaller, I also had a day job, so I’d write on my lunch break and also at night when everyone had gone to bed. I typically sleep 4-5 hours a night, so I used that time to get some words on the page.
I write full-time now and have an office at home. Sadly, my children still can’t figure out a closed door with mom at the computer means she’s working. I’m constantly interrupted. But my schedule is more flexible. Thanks to the pandemic, the house is never empty. There’s always at least one other person home with, if not three other people. I’ve had to adapt as best I can. I crave those quiet moments when the house is empty, so it’s been a struggle.
For anyone who wants to write and has children, my advice is this—you have to want it more than you want anything else. You won’t “find” time to write. You have to “make” time to write. You’ll get less sleep, but if your dream is worth chasing, you’ll make it happen.
