Jared

The Hunter Book 2.5

by R. Sullins

Genre: Paranormal Romance

This wasn’t supposed to be my life.
I enjoyed being in the Army Special Forces and was damn good at it.
Now, I was living the life that my brother had dreamed of- the life that killed him.

Becoming a vampire changed nothing, and yet it changed everything.
I was still a soldier, but now I worked for the local vampire king instead of my country.
And I was finally ready to claim my mate.

I just needed to battle her demons.
That is if my own demons didn’t end up destroying both of us first.

Hunter's Blood

The Hunter Book 1

My name is Ivy Moore.
This morning I woke up a 21-year-old overworked waitress, sister, and not much else.
6 years ago I watched my mother walk away while I was trapped in the mangled car that held my crippled twin sister and the body of my dead father.
My hatred for her ran deep into my bones.
It wasn't until I was attacked by monsters that were attracted to my blood that I began to understand.
With the help of the local arrogant vampire lord, I learned all about my heritage, about vampires and revenants, about what it was like to live again. About learning to love.
While Crispin spent his nights training me to be a deadly killer, someone else was creating an army.
I was a Hunter.
And someone wanted me for my blood.

Excerpt 1
Waking up straddling a sleeping vampire wasn’t quite as unsettling as one might expect. He basically looked like he was in a very deep sleep. It honestly made me think of when my great-grandma was in the hospital and had slipped into a coma before passing away.
Ummm… come to think of it, maybe waking up on top of a body that was completely checked out was a little more unsettling than I had initially thought.
The first thing I did was find the bathroom and have a nice, long, hot shower. While under the spray, I let the previous night play over in my mind and felt a heat fill me that had nothing to do with the spray.
I wanted more.
But I could see that Jared was hesitant to go further with me. I thought he might have been under some misguided belief that he was bad for my health or something. He held me so gently and was so careful with me - too careful. It was apparent he didn’t trust himself, and that made me sad. I needed to find out why. I also didn’t know whether to smack him for his stupidity or hug him for caring so much.
I sighed.
I thought of Ivy and her large dangerous guy and wondered if she had faced the same type of challenge.
When I got out of the shower, I took my time to get ready. I walked back into the bedroom and stopped by the side of the bed, where Jared looked peaceful, even though there was apparently zero consciousness going on. I leaned over and kissed his handsome cheek. I almost killed myself, jumping backward and tripping over the long hem of the robe I was wearing. I landed on my ass but barely felt the harsh landing over the heavy thudding of my heart.
Jared still looked exactly as he had with absolutely no change. His face was still fully relaxed, but I would have sworn to hell and back that I had heard a soft rumble, almost like a purr, come from his chest. But everything that I had been told about vampires the last couple of days said there was no awareness while they were sleeping, which was precisely why Crispin had hired so many guards to patrol and keep all of his vampires safe during the day.
I waited until my heartbeat slowed down until it was closer to normal before slowly getting to my knees and crawling the couple of feet it would take to get back to the side of the bed. I probably looked ridiculous, slowly peeking over the side of the bed.
I realized he was out, and I realized he didn’t really look dead while in his unconscious sleep, but that didn’t stop my imagination from running absolutely wild. I had seen way too many scary movies to not expect a jump scare. He was a vampire, for goodness sake.
After staring at him for a good minute, I chided myself on my childish behavior and finally got up to leave the room. Then, to prove to myself that I was overreacting and ridiculous, I gave him another kiss on the cheek. I waited, hovering over him for a few seconds, and sighed in relief when nothing happened that time.
Even though I knew that sunlight wouldn’t cause Jared to burst into flame and turn into ash, I still decided to take the front entrance to the pool house instead of the private entrance to the guest room. I had to blink and shield my eyes. It was definitely still daytime.
During the short walk back to the main house, I took in everything I hadn’t been able to see the last couple of nights. The surrounding land was beautiful, and it smelled amazing. Scents of fresh air and pine dominated the clear blue sky. Not a single cloud could be seen through the tall trees. I simply stood in the middle of the path with my face lifted and my eyes closed.
It wasn’t the sun that I was enjoying. It was the peacefulness. I wasn’t scared for once in a long time. I was actually looking forward to tomorrow and the next day.

Excerpt 2
“You’re a what?”
It was official; these people were insane.
After Jared led me to a room that was all red velvet couches, gold sconces, and a giant fireplace, I met some truly attractive people.
Ivy was sweet, quiet with haunted blue eyes and an inner strength that I envied. Her fiance, the rich guy that everyone had been talking about, was...something. He radiated this kind of energy that warned me to stay away as strongly as if he wore a sign that read “caution, danger ahead”. I was no idiot. I would not be putting his hospitality to the test. And they had definitely offered me their hospitality. I was immediately told that I was welcome to stay as long as I wanted, with no strings attached.
It all went downhill from there, though.
I shook my head as if that would erase what I had just heard. I pinched the bridge of my nose and counted to ten. I opened my eyes to see every eye in the room on me and promptly closed them again. This time I counted to 100. Surprisingly, everyone was pretty patient with me. I decided to go to 200.
I felt something bump into my fingers and cracked one eye open to see a small glass that looked thick and heavy. It was half-full of an amber liquid that I assumed was whiskey or something. I honestly had no idea what alcoholic beverages there were or what they looked like. I shrugged one shoulder, picked up the glass, and chugged it back.
I instantly regretted that decision.
Fire filled my mouth, my lungs, my stomach. I felt the burning through my nose and started gasping for breath, immediately followed by a coughing fit that threatened to expel my lungs.
“Please, don’t give me any more of that.” I sniffed and rubbed my nose and eyes. “Ever.”
When I was finally calmed down, it was to see the guys all sitting with grins on their faces. Ivy, at least, had the good grace to hide her smile behind her hand.
I glared at Miriam. “Why did you give me that drink? What did I ever do to you?”
She snickered. “You looked like you needed it. I was afraid you were on the verge of a malfunction.”
I sighed and looked back at Crispin. The vampire. Apparently, they were all vampires except Miriam, who worked for them but was more than human. But Crispin was the head vampire. An actual king. If I weren’t so freaked out, I would probably be fascinated.
“Okay, tell me more.”

Can you, for those who don't know you already, tell something about yourself and how you became an author?
I tried off and on since I was 16 years old to write, and complete, a book. It wasn’t until I was given advice from a total stranger that I managed to complete an entire book. That advice was “Don’t re-read what you wrote. You will be caught in an endless cycle while trying to make it perfect. It will never be perfect enough for you. Just write. Don’t stop until it’s done. Just. Write.”
So I wrote. I didn’t (or tried my hardest to resist!) re-read the last chapter, I wrote until it was done.
Then Hunter’s Blood was given an offical birthdate. I just passed my 2 year authorversary!
I do find it much easier to “Just.Write” now and that is making it easier to complete books much quicker than the first couple of books. Believe it or not, I am just now considering myself an author.

What is something unique/quirky about you?
I’m kind of really good with actors and what movies they’ve been in. Show me an actor(ess) and 99% of the time I can tell you what they’ve played in.

What are some of your pet peeves?
People that don’t use their blinkers.

Where were you born/grew up at?
Fresno, CA

What inspired you to write this book?
Jared was a side character, the daytime guard and best friend of Ivy, the heroine. The more I thought about him, the more I felt that he needed his own story.

What can we expect from you in the future?
I have a spin-off story half written already. Anyone remember the conversation with the demon Varek at his club in Hunter’s Blood? Yeah, he gets his own story.
I also have a ghost story/haunted house that I’m pretty excited about!

Where did you come up with the names in the story?
Confession time! I am so so so bad at coming up with names. I have to just randomly pick one or they will remain nameless forever.

Who designed your book covers?
Long story short, the original cover artist fell through but the new one I hired to produce this custom cover did an amazing job. She really managed to capture my vision for Jared. Thank you Kismet New Moon Graphics!

If your book was made into a film, who would you like to play the lead?
I think Anthony Mackie would make a pretty amazing Jared

Are your characters based off real people or did they all come entirely from your imagination?
Usually in each book I write there is at least one character that I have based an actual person I know off of. It is usually a side character. And they may die. Sorry, daughter! XOXO

If your book had a candle, what scent would it be?
Probably a pine scent to represent the forest on the mountain.

How long have you been writing?
I started writing my first novel when I was 16. I never finished it, but I do have the printed manuscript around here somewhere.

Do you read yourself and if so what is your favorite genre?
I will read anything as long as it is romance! Sub-genre doesn’t matter to me.

Do you prefer to write in silence or with noise? Why?
Silence. In fact, I find it extremely difficult to write with any noise or people around. That’s how I often find myself up at 2 am typing away.

Do you write one book at a time or do you have several going at a time?
One book at a time for me! I will think about other plots, but when it comes to actually getting words down I stick to only one book.

Pen or type writer or computer?
Computer

Do you have any advice to offer for new authors?
Don’t over think it! Just sit down and start writing. Don’t re-read. Just keep going until you hit the end.

What is your writing process? For instance do you do an outline first? Do you do the chapters first?
I am what most term as a pantser. I start with a general plot but that’s pretty much as far as planning goes. Before I write each chapter I do try to envision where it needs to go, though.

Do you try more to be original or to deliver to readers what they want?
I will take what readers want into consideration, but I can’t compromise my story in order to make someone happy.

If you could tell your younger writing self anything, what would it be?
Finish that book! Just keep writing! Don’t stop!

Hi!

I guess you can say I have a passion for romance.

You will most often find me with a book in front of my face, whether I'm in the middle of writing one or taking a break by reading one of my favorite authors.

I love my family and my pets. I need quiet time to recharge and I'd rather be deep in the middle of woods than in the middle of a city. Yeah, I don't people well.

I hope you enjoy my stories. I put all my heart into each of them and they are truly my book babies.

Thanks for stopping by!
