A Questionable Suicide...A Detective's Suspicion...And a Desperate Hunt for a Serial Killer Before More Victims Are Found.

New York Police Department’s Sixteenth Precinct in Manhattan is under siege by the flu, and Detective Nick Larson and his partner, Detective Victor Sacco, are up to their armpits with work overload. The captain’s cigar is seriously chewed, and everyone is working around the clock. To complicate matters, on a personal level, things aren’t going smoothly, either. Laura Howard, the woman Nick loves, is also having issues with a psycho twin sister who is doing everything to ruin Laura's business and her life.

Then Nick's captain assigns a new case, a suicide. From the moment Nick steps on scene, however, something doesn't feel quite right, especially when, upon investigating the case further, the supposed suicide looks more and more like an actual homicide. Immediately, Nick's instincts kick into gear, but rev into overdrive when similar, questionable suicides pop up around the area. And with the way things have been going lately, it would just be Nick’s luck to have a serial killer on the loose.

Set in New York City, Hanging Softly in the Night is a story of murder, mental illness, determination, perseverance, and, ultimately, justice.

Q&A with Author Maria Elena Alonso-Sierra
  • Tell us about the process of turning your book into an audiobook.
    • It is time consuming, but oh, so satisfying. Usually you send the narrator (or producer, as many are called) two copies of your work: One in document, the other in PDF. The document file serves as their audio copy, where they can change, delete, or highlight as needed. He, or she, depending on who you chose, then uploads the chapters one by one. I usually listen to each first, while reading the manuscript, making notes on my notepad of errors, pronunciations, even missed sections of narration. Then I will start the process of detailing any errors and the time where those occur. An email is sent with what needs to be done, the producer fixes it, and the final version is uploaded to ACX or a retailer of your choice, depending on contract.
  • Do you believe certain types of writing translate better into audiobook format?
    • Yes. Mysteries and thrillers are a good example. But, not all narrative is created equal. The writing has to be visual, like a mini-mental movie, with good, believable dialogue interchange between characters, and vivid description. That doesn’t mean the writer bores the reader with minutiae, but that the author gives enough to bring setting and characters to life. Not too many books are written that way.
  • How did you select your narrator?
    • By voice. It has to be the type that a listener can hear for minutes or for hours. Also, expressiveness during scenes, and clarity in the actual reading. How the narrator handles changes in character voices and mood.
  • Were there any real, life inspirations behind your writing?
    • Yes. There were two. One was the image of an acquaintance in a social media post. The other: a news article I had read. That gave me the motive and the method of killing in the novel.
  • If this title were being made into a TV series or movie, who would you cast to play the primary roles?
    • Oh, boy. Now that is a hard one. I know sometimes, authors see an actor or a model and choose them to describe their characters. I never do that, which makes it difficult choose. If I were to cast my novel as a film, I’d first look into an actor who is versatile and very good. One that comes to mind is Jake Gyllenhaal as Nick Larson. For Laura Howard, Nick’s love interest, I would try Emilia Clarke. The other cast of characters is a bit more difficult.
  • What do you say to those who view listening to audiobooks as “cheating” or as inferior to “real reading”?
    • First of all, it is not cheating. What does that say of those who see a film based on a novel, instead of reading it? Audiobooks are simply a different medium. Some people are visual, others are auditory. And, remember, there are those who are visually impaired, who have no other choice but to listen to books. Can’t see myself telling my two blind family members that they are cheating by listening to audiobooks. A book can be savored in many, many different ways.
  • How did you celebrate after finishing this novel?
    • A great dinner with some great wine. Then I did my happy dance.
  • Are any of those things referenced in appearance in your work?
    • Actually, yes. All of the above. My novels are chuck-full of food, song, book references, movies, TV shows, and, especially cities and countries. Gives it a bit of authenticity and flavor.
  • What’s next for you?
    • Writing a cozy mystery, this time, while researching crimes and methods for my next Nick Larson novel. Still developing my paranormal and have another suspense on the back burner. Some literary fiction. Short stories…
