Child of Mine

 “Merry Christmas, Cole.”

He tugged on her wrist, bringing her closer. “Come here. You can help me open it.”

She sat on his lap once more, and he put his arms around her, holding her securely. Lauren removed the ribbon and tore open the paper to reveal the back of a picture frame. She held it against her pregnant belly for a minute, not turning it over.

“Remember about a week ago I had an ultrasound at the hospital in Bismarck?”

“Yeah, of course. I wanted to be there, but I had an emergency. You told me everything was progressing normally.”

“That’s right, it is. But the ultrasound was also able to determine the sex of the baby. Do you want to know? Or would you rather be surprised?”

Cole’s heart nearly stopped, and for a moment he was too choked with emotion to speak. He stared at the picture frame in her hands.

“I want to know.”

“Okay.”

She turned the frame over. It was a black-and white ultrasound picture, the baby lying suspended inside Lauren’s womb. It wasn’t clear to him from this picture whether he was looking at a boy or a girl.

Lauren removed her hand, revealing the part of the picture frame she’d been covering. ‘Daddy’s Little Girl’ was stenciled into the pewter.

“A girl,” he breathed. Tears stung his eyes. “We’re having a girl.”

“Yes. Are you happy it’s a girl?”

“Lauren.” He tightened his hold on her, burying his face against her sweet-smelling neck. “I couldn’t be happier. We’re having a girl!”

She laughed and wound her arm around his neck. They held each other, and Cole savored the moment. He and Lauren were having a baby girl. It was a wonderful miracle.

Daddy’s little girl.

Was that the reason she’d wanted to tell him the news in private? Because she didn’t want anyone else to see the picture frame and realize he was the baby’s father?

He hated himself for having doubts and ruining this moment of joy. But no matter how much he loved Lauren, he’d always second guess her motives, always wonder about her feelings.

A feeling of loneliness settled on his heart. Maybe he’d always feel alone in this marriage.

To Heal a Heart

“What exactly is your relationship with my sister?” Ben folded his arms across his broad chest, a big brother intent on protecting his little sister. As a big brother himself, he could respect that, so he told the truth.

“I love her. I want her to be happy and I want to be with her.”

“I see.” Ben cleared his throat. “Have you told her this?”

“No,” Garrett confessed. “I was afraid I’d scare her off. But she scared off anyway when Everett died. She blamed herself, and me, because she wasn’t in the house at the time of his death. She was with me.”

“I see,” Ben said again. His expression didn’t give away his thoughts, a good trait for a lawyer, Garrett supposed. “Like I said, talk to Blair.”

“Talk to me about what?”

He and Ben both turned toward the bottom of the stairs where Blair stood watching them, a mutinous look in her eyes. Ben looked from him to Blair and back again.

“I’ll leave you to it.” He clapped Garrett on the shoulder and walked out of the kitchen, leaving them alone.

She lifted her chin slightly. A gesture of defiance? Of fear? He didn’t want her to be afraid, especially not of him. “What did you want to talk to me about?”

“Why would you take the blame for Everett’s death? There was clearly nothing you could have done to prevent it. What did you mean that it’s always your fault?”

He saw her swallow, her gaze somewhere over his left shoulder.

“It has nothing to do with you.”

That stung. But he wouldn’t let her avoid him. “It has everything to do with me. What hurts you hurts me. I love you, Blair.”

Her gaze shot to his and he read the panic in her eyes. It hurt to see her in such distress at his declaration.

“I don’t expect anything from you, sweetheart. I only wanted you to know how I feel, to know you’re not alone. You’ve got your brothers, and for what it’s worth, you’ve got me.”

She stared at him silently, eyes wide with panic. He rubbed her shoulder, needing to touch her. Finally, she averted her eyes and began to speak.

“Garrett, there are things you don’t know about me. I’ve made mistakes, done things I’m not proud of.”

He grasped both of her shoulders. “There’s nothing you could have done to make me love you any less. I know you, Blair. You’re a good person, a compassionate person.”

“Please Garrett.” She pushed against his chest and he recognized she was hanging on to her composure by a thin thread. “You don’t know.”

“Then tell me!”

She stepped back, blinking and holding one arm out as if to ward him off. He swore softly. He hadn’t meant to yell, and he certainly hadn’t wanted to scare her. He made himself calm down and lower his voice.

“I’m sorry.” He shook his head. “Whatever’s wrong, we can fix it, I promise you.”

Her chin trembled, but her eyes remained dry. The hopelessness and disbelief he saw in them terrified him.

“No one can fix this.”

Unexpected

“What is your style? If you could live in your perfect house, what would it be like?”

Ben leaned against the counter, arms folded across his chest, his expression wistful. “I had my perfect place. In Chicago. It was a loft in a converted warehouse with exposed brick, high ceilings and stainless-steel ducts running throughout. I loved it.”

“It sounds great.”

“It was.” He pushed himself away from the counter and turned to retrieve coffee cups from the cupboard. “But this place is better for the girls. They have lots of room and a big yard to play in. My brother and sister are here, and Masonville is a safe place for them to grow up.”

“It is.”

Masonville might be better for the girls, but Jamie wasn’t certain it was the right choice for Ben. He’d sacrificed a lot for his children.

“What about you? What brings you to Masonville? Or did you grow up here?”

“No, not Masonville, but I did grow up in North Dakota. In Lewiston, about two hundred miles from here.” She clutched her hands together. “I was living in Minneapolis, but after my divorce I decided to take the job at the Masonville clinic. I’ve been here almost three years.”

“You decided to come home,” Ben said.

“Yeah, sort of. I wanted to be closer to my parents but not too close.” She tried to make a joke. “Can’t live with them, can’t live without them. You know?”

His whole demeanor darkened. “I prefer living without my parents.”

They stared at one another and Jamie held her breath. What had happened between him and his parents?

Gradually, Ben’s face relaxed, the storm in his eyes passing. When the coffee was ready, he poured them each a cup. Jamie stirred in milk, then set down her spoon.

“I have a confession to make. Blair told me about Olivia and how she was killed in a car accident. I’m really sorry, Ben.”

“I appreciate your concern.” His voice was clipped. “But we’re doing okay. It’s easier here with family close by.”

Jamie nodded, not knowing what else to say. Silence stretched between them.

“They’re not mine,” Ben said suddenly.

Jamie blinked, confused. “Excuse me?”

“The girls. They’re not my biological children.” His eyes turned fierce, as if readying for an argument. “But dammit, nobody could love them more. And nobody’s going to take them away from me.”

When Jana Richards read her first romance novel, she immediately knew two things: she had to commit the stories running through her head to paper, and they had to end with a happily ever after. She also knew she’d found what she was meant to do. Since then she’s never met a romance genre she didn’t like. She writes contemporary romance, romantic suspense, and historical romance set in World War Two, in lengths ranging from short story to full length novel. Just for fun, she throws in generous helpings of humor, and the occasional dash of the paranormal. Her paranormal romantic suspense “Seeing Things” was a 2008 EPPIE finalist.

In her life away from writing, Jana is an accountant/admin assistant, a mother to two grown daughters, and a wife to her husband Warren. She enjoys golf, yoga, movies, concerts, travel and reading, not necessarily in that order. She and her husband live in Winnipeg, Canada.
