When a fire breaks out at Puffin Cove Rescue they are called in to help with the recovery and ice cream social fundraiser. Sometimes things are not what they seem, and neither are people. When magic is unleashed will what they learn bring them closer together or push them apart?
Excerpt
Paul strode in the door. “Got a call from Brock. They need our help and crates in Puffin Cove. Early morning fire devastated the rescue there. Guess we'll be transporting some of the animals here.”
“I know. Gwen just called but had to take another call from Pepper. We're waiting for her to call back.”
“Okay, I'm going to load as many crates in the Sanctuary's SUV that will fit while we're waiting. Brock said something about having Rita cover for the next few days. Sounds like we’re going to Puffin Cove.”
“But I can't leave all this to Rita." She spread her arms wide then waved them around. The phone rang. Her heart skipped a beat and she yanked the received to her ear. “Gwen?”
“Yes. Brock talked to Paul, but I need you here too. Pepper and Lathen from Lobster Cove Wildlife Rescue are on their way and will be transportation and logistics. They have more room and a shorter distance up the coast. Brock called in a list of needed medications and supplies to his veterinarian clinic. His office manager will have them ready for you to pick up shortly. Probably should bring enough work clothes for a few days.”
“But what can I do?”
“I'll explain when you get here. How long before you two can leave?”
Excerpt:
As Trinity walked through the aftermath of the fire, she lifted the yellow and black caution tape and carefully stepped inside the building. Her gut clenched and that feeling of foreboding washed over her again. The farther she ventured into the burnt building the stronger the gut-wrenching feeling became. Something needs my help. This was a new sensation. She took a small flashlight out of her backpack, directed the beam over the scorched debris, and moved the rubble with her toe. Nothing.
One more sweep of the light and she’d return to the others. Probably not supposed to be here anyway. A weak squawk emanated from the far corner of the building. Picking up a scorched stick, she poked at the debris. A puff of smoke rose as she made her way to where the sound came from. Shining the light into the corner, she saw movement. She knelt down and carefully shifted the charred rubble. Laying on its side, head slightly raised, and using a wing in an attempt to right itself was a small parrot. Its little eyes locked on her for a moment before its head lowered to the ground.
Excerpt:
“Help us unload and get set up. Then you need to go talk to Jackie, she owns Puffin Cove Cafe, and Patsy, owner of Puffin Cove Ice Cream Sundae, the ice cream shop. Merry, the manager of the rescue is around here somewhere. She’ll need to be in the loop too. They’re working up a fundraiser to get the rescue back on its feet as soon as possible. Only—” Gwen put her finger to her lips. “Don’t tell them I said this, but they don’t have a clue. Pepper talked to them earlier.”
Trinity surveyed the smoldering building. One half was completely destroyed. The section still standing was heavily damaged by smoke and water. “It’s going to take a lot.”
“It’s not as bad as it looks right now. At least I hope not. Get a few big fans in here to dry out the wood. Electricians to check the wiring. Suspect it’ll all have to be replaced.” Gwen shook her head. “Anyway, the sooner we get the fundraiser planned the sooner the animals can return home. Between Salem Sanctuary and Lobster Cove Rescue, we have space, but we’ll both be close to capacity. If another disaster strikes it’ll be big trouble.”
Trinity pulled her bottom lip through her front teeth. “It’s been a long time since I’ve done a fundraiser. Don’t they have any foster care animal providers?” Lips pursed with hands on hips, she surveyed what was left of the rescue and the main street of the little town. “It’ll take a miracle, “ she said under her breath and jumped when her boss was quick to respond.
“A few animals have already been allocated to foster care individuals. That’s why I requested you and Paul to come to Puffin Cove.” Gwen slung an arm around her , squeezed and then let go. “My miracle workers.” Her boss brushed her hands together and looked pleased as punch. “Between you and Paul, with his connections in the construction industry, miracles are possible.”
“Speaking of my other miracle worker.” Gwen reached out and grabbed Paul’s arm as he limped by. “Take a load off. One more cart full and we’re done.”
He gave her a grateful look but soldiered on. “We need to get set up so Brock can evaluate the animals and decide where their new digs will be. His clinic is on standby should we be forced to transport them that far.”
“Good point.” Gwen opened her backpack and reached inside. “Brock wanted me to give you and Trinity a key to the cabin. We’re going be here late into the night.” She pulled out a key and handed it to him. She held up a sheet of paper. “These are the directions.” Gwen handed the paper to her.
Excerpt:
“Now down to business.” Back at the table, Trinity went over everyone’s spreadsheets, made notes on hers, and asked for clarification on a few issues. “I think it’s time we adjourn to the Ice Cream Sundae, check out the venue, and reward ourselves. You do have chocolate raspberry ice cream?”
“Of course, wouldn’t be an ice cream shop without it.” Patsy giggled. “ Bowl or waffle cone?”
“Waffle cone most definitely.” Trinity licked her lips, tucked the paperwork into a folder, and slid it into her backpack. “Never know when I might need it.”
“Have we covered everything necessary up to this point? Gwen surveyed faces as each nodded. “Okay then, off to the ice cream shop.”
****
Paul pulled the SUV into the Ice Cream Sundae’s parking lot and cut the engine.
Trinity jumped out, turned in a full circle surveying the shared parking lot and the ice cream shop. “Looks like it may be a bit crowded to hold the fundraiser here.”
“Exactly what I was thinking. We should go inside and be sure. But this parking lot shared with the other merchants won’t do for any outside activities. Besides, don’t want to piss off any store owners if we take up the whole parking lot. Though, I imagine most of the town will be at the event.” Gwen opened the back door and Pepper climbed out.
“Hi Pepper.” Trinity turned her attention back to Gwen. “What ya thinking?” Trinity glanced at the vibrant pink and white striped catering truck from Ice Cream Sundae.
“Fireworks. A live Irish band for a few hours. That kind of thing.” Pepper waved her hand and laughed. “Weren’t asking me were you?”
“No. But I like your ideas.” Gwen glanced at Brock, “Could we have fireworks? Do we need a permit?”
“Don’t know. We can sure check.” He wrapped an arm around her and started toward the ice cream shop.
Pointing out the catering truck, Trinity took a few steps in that direction tugging Paul along. “If we move the fundraiser location to the cabin and its beach, there’d be plenty of room for the band, fireworks, and we could set up the catering truck at the side of the cabin. That way people would have access to both the front of the property and the back. Maybe set up a volleyball net and horseshoe pit.”
Wildlife Rescue has always been one of my passions. I’ve been involved with several rescues and sanctuaries for wildlife, parrots, and all kinds of needy animals.
When I was a kid, I brought home every kind creature that needed love, caring, a home and understanding. I admit my mother was less than thrilled. My bedroom was filled with extra crates, glass enclosures, heating pads, and anything an injured or abandoned creature could need. I say creature, because it didn’t matter whether it was scaled, feathered or furred, I brought it home. Mom drew the line the night I brought home a Coral Snake. My mom called the DOW. Yep, it’s poisonous. Luckily no one got bitten. I thought it was a King snake. After that, I never forgot that Coral Snakes have yellow and red bands that touch each other, while black bands always separate the yellow and red bands on King Snakes. Whew! FYI Coral Snakes are not native to Colorado. Upon further investigation, DOW discovered someone had released several poisonous snakes not from our region in our neighborhood creek.
As I grew up, I discovered there were sanctuary and rescue organizations that were better equipped to handle these types of creatures. I joined their efforts and to this day continue to do so. This is where the inspiration for A Witch’s Journey Series came from. My new release, CHOCOLATE RASPBERRY MAGIC is kinda a continuation of HIDDEN GYPSY MAGIC, third book in the series.
Chocolate Raspberry Magic clicked into my sights as I was finishing Hidden Gypsy Magic. Paul and Trinity were such interesting, hard-working characters that I had to tell their story. Prim and proper Trinity Shilo is the assistant manager for Salem's Wildlife Sanctuary.
Now Paul has also had his share of hard knocks. Paul Thorp is a wounded Special Forces veteran now working in security and computer support A Salem Wildlife Sanctuary.
All bets are off when they are called to assist with rescue and an Ice Cream Social fund raiser for a small Wildlife Rescue in in Puffin Cove, Maine. Though the work can be heartbreaking at times, the rewards are so much more.

A sneak peek between the pages of CHOCOLATE RASPBERRY MAGIC-

Frantically, she glanced around, but there was no one in sight. How far had she ventured without telling anyone? The structure overhead groaned in warning. No time. “Okay little one, it’s you and me. I don’t have much experience at this, but I’ll do my best.” Shrugging out of her backpack, she unzipped it completely. “I’m going to scoop you up in my backpack and get help.” She didn’t raise her voice to call for help for fear of scaring the poor thing.
Clearing as much debris away from the bird as possible, she scooped up the parrot in her bag. Slowly she stood, so as not to jostle the little creature. Holding the bag gently against her chest, she picked her way across the downed wooden braces, charred remnants of cabinetry, and broken glass.

With the majestic Rocky Mountains just outside the window, I sit at my computer with vampires, demons, witches, faeries, and a variety of paranormal creatures gathered around telling me their stories! That makes me an author of paranormal romance novels and cozy mysteries with magic spark. The everyday world is mundane, but sprinkle a little magic and you have fantastic!Colorado is home. I share my life with a wonderful husband of many moons, our brilliant Chow Chow, a terribly spoiled companion parrot, and a forty-year-old box turtle. We enjoy hiking, biking, and camping, also love water sports including kayaking and whitewater rafting, especially on the Arkansas River through the Royal Gorge.Another passion of mine is reading a good novel. You can find me any winter evening curled up in front of a crackling fire with a good book, a mug of hot chocolate, and a big bowl of popcorn. While growing up, if I didn’t like the ending of a book, I’d rewrite it, which led to writing my own books.Reluctantly, I discovered that in real life it’s tough to rewrite an ending.
