Looking Through History's Window
by David E. Young
Genre: Nonfiction, History

In growing up in a church, and then spending seven years in a Bible College and Seminary, I was blessed to hear many outstanding and gifted preachers and Bible teachers. Many used interesting stories or illustrations to drive their points home. In listing of some of these illustrations, I thought I would like to know more details. Sometimes I wondered (thankfully not too often) if the details of the story were really true or accurate as told. Beyond doubt, this could be partly attributed to years of reading “Ripley’s Believe It Or Not” feature in virtually every newspaper’s Sunday comics section. With that in mind, I have included with each illustration not only a title, Scripture verse and topic word, but also the source of the historical story so anyone who is interested can, with the help of modern technology and internet databases, not only find more details regarding the story, but also find documentation to confirm that each story can be validated.
The details of every illustration are, as far as can be validated by historical records, are true.

Four things you may want to know about David E. Young,
author of Looking Through History’s Window.

I have know Dave for about 41 years. He is my father-in-law, and one of the most humble men you will ever meet. Here’s some inside truths about David E. Young.
1. He is legally blind.

Dave has not always been legally blind. He can still see shadows and shapes and faces somewhat. While he was working as a carpenter and was a young husband and father, a nail he was hammering flipped back up into his eye. It was on a day when he didn’t feel well but went into work anyway. He was using a new hammer when it happened and felt the eye fluid running down his check after going into his pupil. He calmly took out his handkerchief (which he ALWAYS carries) and re-ported his injury to his boss. He had already recovered from a previous contractor injury when a ceiling fell on him and broke his pelvis. The eye injury, though, end-ed his carpenter career. Dave wisely felt it was not safe to be on a job site where he had no peripheral vision in his hurt eye. However, there was a silver lining! While recovering, he decided to complete his masters of history degree. This al-lowed him to work and teach, and years later, to write his book.
2. He was an avid hunter.

Dave loved to hunt quail and dove while he was living in Arizona with his wife and small children. After his eye injury healed, he taught himself how to shoot lefthanded. He remembers being quite excited the first time he was able to bag some birds while shooting this way.
3. He loves to read.

Louis L’amour is one of Dave’s favorite storytellers and he has read all of his books. Dave still reads today, although it is through audio books.
4. He is very creative.

In the late 1970’s, Dave spent his weekends gradually turning his Volkswagen Bug into a custom flatbed truck. He eventually drove this to work every day

David Young feels truly blessed! He is now retired and lives with his wife Ruth in Sequim, Washington where he enjoys spending time with his family, especially his 7 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren!
